I have a savage 10 with a 24" barrel. It's very front heavy. I put a sling on it for the first time the other night, and when on my shoulder, it just kept wanting to level out horizontally. I don't intend to take this rifle backpacking or anything, but it'd be nice to throw it on my shoulder on occasion and have it stay there.

Carry it muzzle down.

I'll be honest though,  I hate the traditional rifle sling. Much prefer them attaching on the side.

That's the catch though, the rifle is so long it'll be in danger of bumping the muzzle. Theres a flash hider, so that'd help protect it, but I'd be a little surprised if there isn't a solution to this.

But I agree, traditional slings leave a lot to be desired on modern rifles. I could mount studs on the side, but I don't imagine that'll solve the problem on my back.

Can you post a picture?

My m1903  stays up just fine. What kind of sling?

Look for a safari sling. Rifle rides level in front of you. May work.

If you want it on your back, several choices..best would be a biathlon sling....

A backpack/scabbard with a rifle carrier on it...

Or a dragbag with backpack straps....

Another thing that could work for you is a folding chassis/stock which would compact the rifle and change balance points..I know my MPA folder chassis totally carries different when folded, plus it's a full 11 inches shorter overall....
