ADCO Firearms and John Thomas said no.

It's a new Lilja AR-10 barrel that is too effing heavy.

Both have stopped providing this service. They both will shorten a barrel and tread them, reprofiling isn't an option anymore.

D. Wilson in Colorado says no as well.

I don't know what all he does other than custom suppressors and rifles but he has the equipment to do it.

I am not surprised you're having a tough time.  Over the years most shops have dropped these types of services. The effort that goes into it can be significant and most customers dont want to pay the prices. Add in the "it was a brand new sub MOA barrel, you reprofiled it and now I cant hit a barn" and you can see why people would walk from this service.  These days is it generally more cost effective to buy a new barrel the way you want it and sell the old one.

The people that I know who profile barrels are all bench rest folks doing it for themselves and friends, but 99% of what they work with are blanks.

It’s kind of a PITA depending on profile and length. Most gunsmiths I’ve discussed it with avoid it like the plague. There must be equipment that works better than a standard lathe because the barrel manufacturers don’t seem to have any trouble -but a long skinny barrel in a southbend lathe is a chattering bitch IME.

My barrel is 1.200" under the handguard, I want it reduced to .950", nowhere near skinny. The barrel forward of the gas jouranal is over .900" now, I want that turned to .812".

Wow, that is a fatty. The last one I did (which was also the first and only one) was a 1.25” blank and I turned it down to 1.2 for a couple inches, then 1” for the rest. That wasn’t terrible but I bet it took about 4 hrs. It was only 17” so that probably helped.

I had my uncle turn a .22 LR barrel and he did it in one pass. Took all of ten minutes. Gave me the creeps. Since then, I sent it to ADCO and had them thread it for a silencer and shorten it to 16".

It shoots great, but I want a gunsmith to do the work, not a production machinist who wants the job done and gone in a few minutes. For all I know, gunsmiths would hog off all the metal in one pass too, I just wouldn't have to watch it!

What's the length of the barrel?

No taper needed, simply straight turned with a step?

Maybe Morgan at Class III machining?

@borderpatrol

I don't know where you are located in MI.

You could go to the Michigan Sportsman Forum and do a search for gunsmith.

It does return several results, but you would need to call them. As you have found, not everyone is willing to do the work you want.

If weight is the concern, fluting will do it.
