Cleaned my 22-250 today and scoped it, was curious how much firecracking others go with, without accuracy suffering. It probably already is, but it's still minute of prairie dog head at 200.

I don't think there is anything you can do for it. Just shoot it till either it or you are no longer as accurate then blame the barrel.

To my knowledge there is no repair or treatment for this issue other than a barrel replacement and you are not anywhere near that IMHO..

That looks pretty minor to me.  Our 223 F class rifles will still shoot good with well over an inch of rifling fire cracked.  The fire cracking does seem to effect accuracy as much as the copper fouling that the fire cracking generates.

Only worry about it when it doesn't shoot, then get a new barrel... aka don't worry about it. Let the performance tell you.

Is that just the freebore? I'd look at the leade and first couple inches of rifling.

that is the leade area. this barrel has no freebore. I was hoping to maybe get a collection of pictures with descriptions to see firecracking, when the accuracy falls off. I understand that I have a bit more life in this barrel.

Don’t use a scope to look for new problems. Use it to verify suspected problems.

Accuracy-test the barrel periodically and continue using it until accuracy is no longer satisfactory. Scope it once it no longer performs. Scoping a barrel that still performs well just makes you feel bad.

Freebore is the part of the throat without lands; the jump. Leade is where the lands begin, ususally spec'd between 1-3 degrees from groove diameter to land diameter.

The worse barrel I have shot out, my factory 300rum barrel off Rem model 700, it opened the groups over 1MOA at about 1500 rounds, I continued to shoot it, at 2500 rounds it Was hard to keep the shots inside a 2-3 MOA area, I finally pulled the barrel at 3500 rounds and it was nasty..At 1700 rounds I ran it by my local smith and they put a scope down the barrel, it was showing heavy cracks covering most of the diameter out past 6 inches or so.. Amazingly it showed light cracking all the way out to the brake...It wasn't near the damage up at the chamber end, but it was way more then I expected..A couple years back I got a cheap bore scope and have been checking barrels reasonable often...a lot of good shooting rifles are pretty heavily cracked up inside....

This is my AR barrel, as made by Larue...before firing, this is the gas port..

This is a bartlein barrel chambered in 300rum with about 1200 rounds thru it, still shoots sub MOA,but not as tight as it was when new..

Target results determines barrel replacement.

The bain of the barrel industry has been cheap bore scopes.

I have used Tubb's barrel polishing bullets on barrels that were nearing their end stage with good results.

Never use Tubb's Final Finish or his other bullets on new barrels unless they are already a disappointment. They should be reserved for barrels that are considered for replacement.
