I have a bunch of books on how to build a number of shop tools like a brake, engine hoist and stand etc.

Which is all great if you have lots of free time and a good source for cheap or free scrap metal.

Problem is, Steel prices have gone up so much in the last few years that even buying scrap costs more than buying a ready made unit from Harbor Freight or even better an old used U.S. made Industrial quality tool from a used machinery dealer.

I saved the steel frames from old beds I've thrown out over the years. Great material for many projects.
