Fishing up in Green Bay yesterday, we caught quite a few nice walleyes. It was good to be in the boat again even though there was still ice on the lake.

Thanks. I went on a charter down at Disney World this last week. Pretty cool to land a lunker while you can see the ball at Epcot and Cinderella’s castle at Magic Kingdom.

Was that really a snakehead? Where in PA did you catch it?

Northern snakehead, 100%. Dropped a bowfin a little later. Never said it was in PA though. Was in NJ. Delaware River watershed however. Delaware River has a snakehead population as well as some lakes in Philadelphia, namely FDR Park. They've been here a while and they're going to stay.

Out of curiosity, why would you release it?

I ask because we don't have them down here in SC but I always understood them to be non-native invasive species. Plus, I hear they're very good table fare.

I'm not a fan if killing animals to just kill them. I wasn't set up that day to harvest any fish. If I killed every non-native fish in my area there would be an issue had by many anglers in the area as the list would include species of bass, trout, and catfish. Also, much of the thought about snakeheads has been spread by the media. Scientific data has shown that the introduction of snakeheads in an area can actually improve the sizes of the fishes established in said area. It also shows that the ecosystems where they've been introduced have not encountered the total destruction that was once thought was inevitable, see Potomac River watershed.

It's a topic for another thread and one that will surely end in a "he said, she said" type of back and forth.

Obligatory pic for thread:

No harm meant. My brother fishes for them up in MD and I know the DNR/Game and Fish in MD, DE and NJ ask fishermen to kill the fish if they catch them and contact local DNR/Game and Fish authorities when/if they catch them.

My brother said they've quickly become one of his favorite freshwater fish to eat. Haven't tried it yet but looking forward to it when I go to visit later this year.

No harm taken. It's a very sensitive subject in certain circles. The DNR/Fish police can ask, but cannot force you to kill them. In NJ it is unlawful to transport live snakeheads. That's the only thing they can have you do to prevent the spread of them. As far as fun, most definitely. They're very fun to catch and once it stops monsooning, I'll be out hunting them some more. Gotta get my bowfin, haven't done that one yet.

We don't have any snakeheads down here but we have plenty of bowfin. A lot of folks call them "mud fish" down here. I've heard a few call them "grindle" too.

Unlike the snakehead, I have no desire to eat a bowfin but they fight like hell. Good luck.

Gave the Crappie a break. It's sad when you have to go across the state line to Arkansas to get bait made in in Oklahoma.

I live on the water and these are the latest fro behind the house.
Good ole BPB

And a friggin Mayan Cichlid aka Atomic Sunfish. Just a pic to show you what kind of invasive shit has nearly taken over our waterways by me. They eat ANYTHING. Dough balls, hotdogs, lures, live bait. They don't give a shit. I even caught one on   balled up piece of foil from a  cigarette pack.  They fight pretty damn good though

Worked for 34+ years without a hiccup, plant shut down for two weeks (Aerospace engineering)...No fucking way I'm going to survive this. Told to stay off work phones and laptops. Day three of many and I'm going nuts....
