Not needed.

We have our fire and eat 100 yards or more away from where we sleep. We have sleeping only clothes and don't have any gum, candy, toothpaste, etc. in tents. Haven't had any problems with critters yet in 20 years of camping 25+ nights/year.

generally theres one or two sentrys posted near the fire on top or close to the beer cooler to make sure no one comes into the AO unnoticed.

Usually its not a problem to get people to volunteer for the 2am to 6am shift.  Its the 6 to noon shift thats hard.

Chloe is a 50 pound blue-brindle pitbull, who thinks I am God. She also beleives she was put on this earth to protect me and mine. She is not bullet proof, however, you won't have a lot of time to react to her because she is extremely quick. I also keep guns near me at all times. While someone is attempting to deal with Chloe, I will be awakening, picking up a gun, and looking for the asshole who is probably trying to hurt Chloe, so I'm not going to be in a good mood.

Dogs are great early warning systems.

I really never felt the need. Except when in the Army and not so nice people were around. If you get out more you will find most critters will avoid you. Note we do not allow big man-eating bears down here. If I was in grizz country, nother story. WJ

We ring the campsite with empty beer cans even though it takes half of the afternoon and most of the night.

I just don't worry about it.  I often camp with no tent, just a ground cloth, pad and tarp.

I don't camp near my fire, or near a trail/ road where anyone can see or smell my campfire.  If I am worried, I run a cold camp, using just a Pocket Rocket stove, and turn in when it gets dard.

The tent lines seem to do a good job of tripping everyone at night.

I was thinking the same thing.

My friends and I go armed.... we camo are camp sight from any path/roadway. Follow light/nose discipline, cover our tracks etc.... As for sentry duty. We post beer can alarm and also have the dogs out.

We're worried about poachers, druggies growing shit out there, and the wild meat eating critter. That's about it.....

Camping for me and my friends is to get away from folks and relax. Not go on a FTX. But we follow some safety guidelines from our time in the service for peace of mind.

First and usually only line of defense is Boomer; my trusty 16 year old Black lab. But since he went to the big duck field in the sky over the winter this summer is the season of the new black lab pup Boomer Jr. and and Kimber Pro standing duty till we get some obedience training under the belt.

Hopefully the park ranger doesn't try to find you to tell you there's a nasty storm coming.

Yeah but once the first zombie gets through, then they all keep coming.

Stealth not being an option for me, as I snore like a chainsaw at full throttle, my defense is easy. If the snoring stops, the 12g gets racked.

Seriously, some one here once gave the advice of running the line from a fishing reel around your perimeter and setting the drag low. If something walks into the area, the reel starts clicking, thus waking you.

Hopefully an exploding claymore and screaming of the undead will wake you up pretty quickly, if not, well you've got bigger problems...
