Kenwood has come a long ways from the old TS-830s I have. It was my first HF radio and still sits in my shack in it's place of honor.

You're gonna love your new radio. Kenwood makes great stuff.

I'm new so bear with me here!

What makes this Kenwood such a better radio then other mfgs?

What is it's cost?

Is this more of an advanced radio and if so what is a good starter radio. I have a Baeofend UV-5r and can just "listen," for the time being.

Thanks!

Kenwood, Icom and Yaesu are the big 3. They have all been in the market for a number of years and are the brands that people tend to buy because they are reliable.

Your Baeofeng is a 2 meter/440 radio. I've not seen any of these new Chinese made radios, but people seem to be ggiving them good reviews. At some point you're likely gonna want to move up to HF.

Trust me, a guy can tie up thousands and thousands of dollars in radio gear. Ask me how I know.

The trick is to define what you want to be able to do, research which radios will cover that list, and then do extensive research on the internet to see performance and reliability reviews....before you spend one plug nickle. You'll have many chances to spend and spend and spend once your siCKtATe develops.

I'll raise your 820 to a 530 and 820s and many 6146.  I use them in my other transmitters.  My most modern Kenwood HF rig is a ts-50

I had one of the early TS-590s, a very good receiver, extra perks for digital modes etc. What killed it for me was the TX spike that caused problems for the Amp. Granted, the Amp is a THP 1.2K fx that cost more than the rig, they just didn't play well together. Other than that no problems. It really is a very sophisticated rig for the money.

Congrats!

A local friend of mine, local as in he lives 500 feet South of me, was thinking about replacing his IC-751A with a FT-950.

I suggested he look at the TS-590 and now he really wants one of those.  It really does look like the best rig in that price range.

Yep.

I looked at the FT-950 and didn't like it near as much.

If I can step up to a rig and operate it without cracking the book, it's a bonus.

I was able to do anything I wanted with the TS-590 without looking at the manual.

The FT-950 seemed like a chore, in comparison ( adjusting the TX power, for example)

( I might be a bit bias coming from it's smaller brother, the TS-480sat )

HRO has them for $1559 with a FREE  SAMLEX power supply.

I figured I could always use another 23 Amp supply

Main trading has the cheapest price I found, $1499 but they are out of stock.

AES has a pretty good price too.
