How do you guys like to approach the WODs?
They rarely incorporate target stroke or heart rate. In cycling there are 2 main schools of thought; HR zone training, and power output. I'd like to measure performance over time based on something a little more than just raw speed. Curious how others decide on training targets/goals for the C2 WOD or other fitness programs. Do you just get on there and rip it as fast as you can? Shoot for a consistent heart rate over duration? Focus on consistent stroke rate and speed? |
|
|
I look at the wods as a mini race series. They let me compare my results to others and see if I'm making progress. So I tend to go for score.
As an example, today's game is maximizing meters. 4/3/2/1/2/3/4 minutes with 2 minutes rest. For relatively short efforts I like to be fully warmed up to working HR before starting, so probably 4 minutes of increasing intensity. Then I know from experience I can hold about a 2 minute pace for those intervals, so that's what I'll shoot for. I'll probably drop off in the last 30 seconds or so of the 4 min intervals. I might push harder on the 1 and 2 min intervals. Beyond the wods - I track long term progress with fixed length pieces. 1000, 2000, 5000 are good lengths. I always wear my HR monitor and someday I'll plot HR vs watts as a way to track progress. The standard length pieces can be ranked against everyone in the world. I tend to do fairly short intense intervals, say 1min row/1 min rest, or sometimes I'll row until I hit target HR then recover to a set HR. For longer pieces like 5k I try to keep my HR dialed up to a value I know I can sustain. If I go anaerobic it usually takes a little while to recover, and I feel like my overall performance suffers. ETA: stroke rate - I tend to let breathing dictate that, and I have decreased my rate quite a bit. I started way too high, like 30 ish, then a coach pointed out I was going too fast. So I slowed to 22-ish, now I try to row about 19 or so. It kind of depends on damper setting. There's probably an optimum rate that lets the flywheel decelerate until it's at optimum speed for the athlete. I noticed Darkhorse rows at like 16 - 18 or so. |

Today's wod is 10k for time. This would be a good day to move outside, put on some tunes, and log a nice long workout that can be ranked

I’d like to be able to get down to a 2:10/500m at those distances but I think at my age, those days are probably behind me. * I’m closing in on 4M meters and the machine still looks and functions like new. I did change out the seat to an EndureRow early on and it has really worked well for me. |

Does anyone do ranked workouts? I'm wondering how long it takes for the ranked leaderboards to update. I just didba 2000 meter row and beat a prior time. I'm curious to see how far I can climb the rankings before the end of the year.
Edit: I figured it out. I had to go into my log and rank the workout. There is a button you have to click before it is ranked. It's not automatically updated. |

Come on, kiddos. Last 9 days. Get some meters in.
I'm on pace for 100k and I feel like I've been hit by a truck. But, I feel good at the same time. Still rowing slow as hell but I'm getting on the machine and doing it. That's got to count for something, right? |

Wow time flies. It's been a busy couple months. I've moved everything I own at least twice, spent way too many evenings signing paperwork, was incapacitated with back spasms for a while but now the rower is in a good spot and it's time to grit my teeth and dive back in.

Not on the arfcom team, as two friends picked up C2s also.
We’re going for 200K each in the holiday challenge. I’m at 85 as of now. We plan to row a marathon near the end, our first one, so i am really just targeting 160K over the next 2 weeks. (80 more). |

I expect to be back on the rower this week to start getting ready for 2024 VTC.
For anyone who isn't on the team, I think you can join here: https://log.concept2.com/team/7747 Join up! Let's do this thing. Post any questions about using the logbook, linking the app to your rower, physical form/technique questions etc. Lots of knowledgable folks here to help. https://log.concept2.com/challenges/vtc Virtual Team Challenge The Virtual Team Challenge (VTC), runs every year from January 1 31. Follow the directions below to participate! The Details Each team completes as many meters as they can collectively between 12:00 a.m. January 1 and 11:59 p.m. January 31. RowErg, SkiErg and BikeErg meters only (no on water/on snow meters please). You can combine meters from each machine to reach the challenge goal. Note: BikeErg meters are counted as half when applied to the challenge. This is a team challenge. You must belong to a team to participate. This is not the same as your club affiliation in your profile. See "Information for Team Members" below. Please visit the Joining A Team for more information on how to join a team. Important: Team members need to confirm they intend to take part in each challenge. You do this from the Team member page. Please visit the Starting and Managing a Team page for more information on how to setup and run a team. Teams must consist of at least two (2) people. Team members will not appear on challenge boards until at least two people are taking part. Important deadline: Complete the following tasks by January 16 23:59 GMT (18:59 ET) or your team will not be enrolled in the challenge and/or your team members' meters will not count for the challenge: All team members must be added to your team. Team members who have their own logbooks must indicate in their logbooks that they are actively participating in the current challenge. (See the Team member page for more information.) Meters must be entered online. Because of the large number of participants in the challenge, we cannot accept results via phone, fax or email. We suggest that any members who have access to the internet create their own profile so that they can enter their own results. Meters completed each week should be entered no later than midnight on Friday of that week. This works on the honor system. It makes it fair and fun for everyone if you can watch the progress of the teams that you are competing against. Concept2 reserves the right to ask for proof of meter totals if they seem suspect and to disqualify any team from the challenge who we feel is not participating honestly. Deadline for entering meters: February 3 23:59 GMT (18:59 ET). Who Can Participate Virtual teams (not based on or around a specific physical location) can be made up of anyone from anywhere who wants to participate friends, family, co-workers, old schoolmates, rowing teammates, and so on. Teams can also be real "clubs" with a physical location. Team captains will be asked to indicate their club division when registering their team for the first time. The choices are: Virtual Education Military On-Water Health/Fitness Corporate Emergency Services Medical Facility Correctional Facility CrossFit View Quote |
