Shoulder and back are feeling better so getting back into it

45# ruck, 20# weighted vest

3.24 miles, 57:58 total time

Could go faster, but walking with my wife is worth going slower

45lb ruck

Really starting to like these Viktos boots. They remind me of jungle boots but with a bit of cushion. Nice and wide toebox, too

Maybe one day I’ll get back to being able to do a 12 miler.

Doubt I’ll ever get it to sub 3 hours, though. Those days are way back there *points to the 90’s*

Never say never. I was 51 for this one-

35lbs pack, + rifle & a gallon of water. That was at about 3000' elevation. On flat ground closer the sea level, 3 hours would have been no problem.

Doing some quick math since I can’t ruck with a rifle, 35lb dry, +10 rifle, +5 helmet, +10LBE = 60lbs ish, + water

I got some work to put in to get back there.

That's your "back in the day" load?

I couldn't do that regularly now, nope.

Back in 2020 a buddy and I were training up for the inaugural Warfighter Challenge and we were carrying 55-60lbs packs, plus armor, plus water. We'd sometimes be stepping off at 75+ pounds. Longest I did that was 10 miles at a 17 minute/mile pace, and it was rough.

Now I keep in under 50lbs and just either up the pace or distance, but I will admit it's been a minute since I've rucked at all.

I figure that’s about what I carried back when I was Infantry for schools that had the 12mi ruck as a standard.

And I could do it in 2:30 with a bit of jogging.

Yeah, that's beast mode. I've never been there and never will at this point.

If I can workout every morning for about 1.5 hours, and gradually work back into it, I should be able to get there in a year or so

Realistically, if I could get to the point of just getting back to 12 miles in 4 hours, I’d be GTG

Going have to see if I can get the wife to stay home so I can get at it. Otherwise the first 3 miles will be slow.

I weighed my ruck when I was done because I’d been drinking water and wanted to make sure I was still close to 45lbs

I was at 51

Nice work.

The wife is definitely slowing you down, but I get it. Mine joined me on a 10 miler last year and I had to dial it back a bit. Jogging the downhills seemed counter to quality time with the wife.

Funny part is she bitched about being sore for days afterwards, she was carrying nothing, I was carrying 50lbs. plus her water.

I’ll hurt myself to make up the time instead of not having her come along. It’s an hour of zero distractions. No kids, no dogs, no TV, no internet.

What kind of pack/gear do you start with?

It looks like there is a local rucking event at a VFW in september. I don't have any details, but last year was 18k with 18# (or kilos? forgot which), this year is 22K.

Might be something to use to help motivate getting outside for walks.

literally any pack that has some sort of structure, hip belt and shoulder strap configuration that DOESN'T put most of the weight on your shoulders. You want a pack that distributes the weight mostly on your hips (so pretty much any civilian backpacking pack). Other than that you can literally just wear sneakers if you will only be on pavement. Drink adequate amounts of water throughout the ruck. Add electrolytes if needed. Stretch your legs well before you start. Don't That's put too much weight in your pack at first. That's it. Not very complicated.

I honestly think you're there now, looking at that last hike. I guess it depends on how bad that 6 miles beat you up.

You could bring the pace way down (or take breaks) and see if you can last for another 6. I'd bet you could beat 4 hours by a fair margin.

I was starting to get some twinging in the legs.

I think when I start going for more miles I’ll cut the weight back to start.

You guys have inspired me. Had some health issues this summer and haven't rucked since May. Figured if I'm going to be posting in this thread I'd better start putting my money where my mouth is. It did not go well, LOL.

47lbs + three liters of water. Goal was two loops of the local forest preserve at 4mph, I managed one at 3.8mph. Could have done another, but my pace would have dropped off significantly and I would have been useless for anything else today. I've let myself slip more than I thought.

Got it in 54:42 and then coasted the last bit to get home.

Got out this morning for a couple circuits at the local forest preserve. First one was not about pace. A buddy brought his young kids, so we took it easy. Second one with no kids we wicked it up a bit. 38lbs. pack.

Still have a lot of work to do, but it felt better than the last one.

Nice. I think I'll try to get out for 6 miles at 50-55lbs. this weekend. Should be doable if I drop my pace a bit.

Side question, do you find the weighted vest is overall easier than more weight in the pack? I was always conflicted when I rucked with armor. It carried easier but it was hotter than hell.

5.03mi, 55#
10min rest
5.05mi, 55#

Yesterday, did one of the GORUCK 1000 rep workouts from their old Heavy training plan. 200 push-ups, 200 Squats with 30# plate, 200 Overhead presses with 30# plate, 200 lunges, 200 Curls with 30# plate. My legs were howling before rucking today. Now, I hope I can move later.

As for the vest, I always had difficulty finding a good breathing pattern, but I have a pair of 15# training plates. Could be too much on my chest causing shallow breathing.

70# is no joke. The 65# I did last week for 5mi was tough, so o dropped it to 50# for the second 5mi. Good luck and get after it.

I’d have to load it into the ruck to find out. I mainly do it because I’m lazy and don’t want to have to pack and repack the ruck to change the weight

5.03mi, 35#. Did another 1000rep workout yesterday, mostly upper body. Taking a rest day tomorrow before my planned 25mi ruck with 50# on Saturday. Then turnaround on Sunday and go for a walk with the wife and probably carry at least 45#.
