After much drama, I finally got my new card folding last night. Initial calculations showed about a 7k PPD increase.
Now that the weather is cool, I'll let it run in my basement workroom when I am not using it for other purposes. Machine is using about 200 Watts of electricity while folding. Just enough to take the edge off the cold! |

Is this supposed to rape 50% of your CPU at all times? Or will it go away when I do something CPU heavy? |

You must be running the regular client on a dual core machine or something. If you have a multi core machine, make sure you are running the latest SMP client. You will get more points that way, and your results will be more useful. The CPU priority for folding can be set using the -configonly flag at launch, in the console version. If you leave it at default, it only takes idle CPU cycles to do it's work. Another higher priority process will still have 100% access to the CPU. |

Hey I am contemplating joining the folding. There are many great causes that I'd love to support.
Dumb question but will this folding program work on windows 7 professional 64bit edition. If so which one should I download on the website? My stats are 3.2ghz proc, 8gb 6400 ram, nvidia 9800gtx, and 80gb Intel SSD I might just choose to run this on my extra laptop, the folding program will eat up all computer resources but not all internet resources as if I were downloading the whole entire world via torrents or some crap right?? |

You can run the SMP (Serial Multi Processor) Console client. It is for all modern versions of Windows and I believe it is compatible with both 32 and 64 bit machines. You must have at least a dual core processor in order to run the SMP client though. Your post didn't mention the CPU stats other than the clock speed. Since you have a 9800 GTX video card, I would recommend folding on that as well using the nVidia GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) client. It is a good folder, and pretty much the only thing I have running right now. If you have a dual core processor, you can run both the SMP client and the GPU client if you want. That will boost your point earnings, and do more work for the project. Set the GPU client to a slightly higher priority than the SMP client The folding programs are configured by default to only consume spare computing cycles for calculations. When I am running an SMP client on a laptop, I don't notice any performance hit with day to day activities. The program doesn't get in the way. It does crank the fan on and put off some heat though, pretty much constantly. I wouldn't worry about not having power for internet or torrents if you were running a default configuration. A dual core laptop running the SMP client can earn over a thousand points a day, if you don't ask it to do much else. Go Here: Link to High Performance Clients for access to the clients I mentioned. The regular client for other OSes and single processors is available from the main download page. |

Just built a new system, downloading the high performance f@h gpu client to see what my new Sapphire 5830 can do.
Eta: Apparently I can't run it because my GPU isn't supported or I'm running an old driver...which I just downloaded from ATI's website yesterday. Eta2: Re-downloaded the high performance beta, had to add a command to the target box in the shortcut properties to force it to work since right now my car is one of the several 5xxx series that isn't identified by the f@h software. I believe version 6.30 will contain the fix for this. |

1 SMP and 1 GPU. I'll just let it run and see how things go for now. |

Have they released a solid GPU client for the ATI 5800 series yet? I'm running a Sapphire 5830, will be running another in crossfire soon...last I tried to f@h the GPU client wouldn't function properly due to it not being compatible with my card. I suppose I could run the CPU client, I've got a 965BE running 4.0GHz @ 1.45v, but don't these clients do worse then the GPU clients?
|
|
|
IDK, the cpu client just does not want to run on my computer for some reason. It just sits idle forever......I'm not fooling with it any longer. The GPU client works well enough- 10 WU in less than a day with a 9800GT.

Anyone folding on the PS3? Got that going the other day and it was folding really fast until WU number 3 which is taking about 4 times longer to complete. Just the complexity of this WU maybe?

I see that you are absolutely correct. My Ps3 knocked out 4 more WU's last night- it took over a day just to get thru the more complex one. Good thing my GPU is handling everything just fine thus far!

On a system that runs more than what one would consider "average", I'd suggest dusting the fans and case interior once every month or two. This is especially important for PCs that are near pets, or cigarette smoke. My rig is around both and all intake air is filtered...gotta clean those filters once a week because the hair and dust builds up fast. Only the real fine dust makes it in to the case, which is cleaned out 1-2 times a month. I could probably stretch those cleanings a little more, but I prefer to keep everything nice and clean and not give that crap a chance to build up on my fan blades. |

OK. Seven more systems online. They are non-mission critical here and can run this type of fun stuff. May have more available as time goes on.

I've got a closet full of old P4 systems, and one Pentium D system. I'd like to get one or two of them doing 24/7 folding. Would they be better for CPU folding, or is there an AGP graphics card out there that I could buy that would GPU fold nicely?

I need to pick up another 9800gt for my old dell. It can't seem to handle the cpu client and the old GPU is not supported by the folding client. If I can get that running I'll be in business!

OK Guys,
Help a very confused person out....My brain is mush from reading some of the documentation. The system is as follows.....What would be the best client to run. AMD Phenom II 6 core at 2.8Ghz 8 Gigs of Ram Win 7 64 bit 2- ATI HD5770's in Crossfire. |
|
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed....Nuff Said..... P.S. Fuck you France!!!!!
|
Assuming there is an ATI GPU client, then I would get that running first.
You can certainly take advantage of any unused cpu cycles (and there will be many) to run the SMP client. Set the GPU client priority slightly higher than the SMP client. The GPU doesn't need a super fast CPU to keep things cranking, but you have to keep it fed. Running the SMP at a higher priority may prevent that from happening. I spent $50 this summer upgrading my computer to a dual core. Now it makes sense to run both the GPU client on my 9800 GTX+ and the SMP client on my dual core. It's starting to cool off again, so it's time to dust off F@H! ETA - Crossfire doesn't work with F@H, but you can run a separate client for each card. |
