Because I can not leave well enough alone....I'm starting a thread on the modifications I'm doing to my Ruger 10/22 take down Carbine.

This is the first of a few....

The Bolt catch: there are more than a couple vids on youtube on how to do this one.....but if you know your 10/22....it's simple either way.

Look at the "V" atop the catch.....note that all you do is grind it out to the shape of a triangle....

What this does...is allow you to keep a loaded magazine in the mag well...this can be done safely due to the fact that it is not a complete firearm when broke down. When you snap the 2 halves together....all you have to do to load is tug back on the charging handle about 3/16" to dis-engage the catch.

You can buy a modified piece from various parts catalogs and online stores....but this is very.....very simple. However....if unsure...don't attempt.

Next up will be the installation of a scout scope rail....stay tuned..

Ruger's new 10/22 that is designed to have the barrel come off easily and thus be taken down.  It'll be interesting to see what the aftermarket community does for it.

What are they running? The guy at Academy told me they'd be getting some in this weekend and expected them to be around $350.

I used a chop off wheel, hack saw, and a file.....too small of job to fire up the mill.

took about 10 mins.....would have took longer than that to clamp it in the mill.

Cool. What are your thoughts so far? I've been wanting a 10/22 for years and finally picked one up from a friend last week. I like the idea of the takedown though.

I have to say that looks bad ass.

Can I ask why you went with a scout rail over just a receiver rail?

I opted for a receiver rail and a scope with QD rings.  I might get some 77/22 sights as I was told there are 1/8" taller that the 10/22.  Which are somewhat hard to see past the rail.

Whats your backup plan if the scope goes down for some reason doing a hike or whatever?

The barrel detaches....I'd rather have the optics stay with the barrel than the receiver.

The sights pic'ed above will add about 8" to the sight radius.

The scout rail and something like a Fastfire or Trijicon RMR would be ideal for that gun. Might even think about "melting" the optic into the rail for an even lower mount.

Yep.....it fits in the same side no problem.

So I had an issue with the rear of the receiver wanting to lift....due to the fact that the forearm and barrel band are not part of the unit.....

The fellow from one of the Ruger boards had the same issue.....he put in a set screw.....so I followed suit.....

You also could have placed a block, or cross bolt, across the stock that fits into the receiver/trigger frame gap. Which would limit up and down movement without placing pressure on the receiver.

I cerakoted the gun black, cut barrel to 16.25 and threaded the barrel. Still thinking about optics. I mounted a scope on the gun, but it seem to change the handling characteristics too much. Thinking about a Trijicon RMR or mini ACOG

Pressure on the receiver is minimal.....I'm not worried about it.

did you shim the back of the scout rail to get it off the barrel lock nut?....or cut the excess material out?

Cut excess material. Never thought about shimming the rail

VERY nice. I'm waiting to see what aftermarket parts become available. I'll remain satisfied with my SR-22....... for now.

What suppressor did you use for the perm job?

It's either going to be that or this route.....

I'd look long and hard at the Huntertown Arms T22 Fusion Integral
The barrel is not part of the serialized piece so if you ever want a different barrel for whatever reason, you can replace it.

Appears to be very nice-looking workmanship.  However, it's my strong belief that every firearm must have some sort of decent BUIS system; even the best optics have failed.   I am surprised that you did not include same.

Believe it or not....the rail has a very nice groove in it that can act as a sight....I was popping soda cans at 25 yards easily once I figured out the hold.

For the roll that I would put that gun in, BUIS are not required. This is range toy, not a defensive firearm.

Echo: On that groove in the rail, you are correct. Before I got a scope on it, I was shooting 2 liters at 50 yards.
