It's a 5/8 straight, American or (unlikely) British. No barber notch or other interesting end; made for private owners. I need to see the writing better to be more helpful. Probably made between 1910 and 1930. |

I assumed my grandpa's shave setup was long gone considering he passed away 15 years ago after my grandmother passed away we found it tucked away 15 years later I washed the old spice mug and his brush.... smell came right back to add to this thread... came from one of our own a few years ago |

Thanks fish. I used my belt sharpener setup to take off just the original edge and then resharpened it and then honed it. Had to work real slow and constantly watch the blade temp to keep the temper. I got lucky that the nics weren't past the factory edge line. I still need to depin it and clean under the scales and replace the rusted wedge on the dark one but its a fun project and at least I can shave with them now.

Are these something you found at an antique type store? I'm really digging the translucent, orange scales.. never owned a straight before, but if I did I'd like to get something similar. |

I find most of them in antique stores for the most part. You can get them on ebay for cheap as well.

I like a really close shave and my skin is fairly sensitive. I tried DE for a while, but now I use a badger brush, Proraso shave cream, and Mach 3 disposable razors. The DE wound up irritating my skin more.
My great grandpa was a barber (where I got the DE from). He had a bunch of straight razors, I'd guess 6-10 of them. I've never used one because I don't know proper technique for shaving or sharpening (also, I didn't find his strop in his box of barber stuff). Some are in real good shape and some have a little corrosion. The other thing is, I generally shave in the shower by feel and I'm not sure if that'd be OK for a straight razor. Any tips? Perhaps a tutorial or something? If y'all think I can get a close shave with less irritation, I'd give it a go. |

1st Row Left: Crump & Co. "Standard". Blade has a serious frown and needs some work. 1st Row Right: "Janissaire". Possibly ERN, but no such mark. I am still considering my options for re-scaling. 2nd Row Left: Dandercide Mfg. Co., "Black Dog" 2nd Row Right: Dubl Duck, Pearl Duck "Satinedge" 3rd Row Left: W.H. Morley & Sons, "Clover Brand" 3rd Row Right: A. Witte, "Gold Bug" 4th Row Left: George Wostenholm & Son's [sic], Pipe 4th Row Right: Crown and sword symbol and "Wald-Germany". No maker's mark, so who knows? Not pictured: A cheap Gold Dollar that I might try to make usable some day. They're all in less than stellar shape, but I paid an average of ~$6 apiece for them. Dubl Duck when I bought it: Attached File After a little love: Attached File Still needs a lot of cleaning up. I suspect celluloid rot, so I'll keep an eye on this one and re-scale if necessary. It also had a serious crack (that turned into a chip) near the heel that needed honing out. Shaves beautifully, though. Gold Bug: Attached File The mystery Crown & Sword: Attached File All have been honed on lapping film (12u, 9u, 5u, 3u, 1u, then .5u). I need to buy some materials (and watch some tutorials) to get that lovely mirror finish many of you are so good at bringing out. Sorry, I'm no photographer, and my phone camera isn't great. |

I bought this United Cutlery blade with some busted up scales. Flea bay special...
Anywho, I'm just waiting on some pins and I'll have this back in shaving condition in no time. Attached File I get the feeling I'm going to have to thin out the scales just a bit but I'm happy with the progress of my first restoration attempt. |

I just picked up my first straight. I'm just doing disposable blades. I've been using a safety razor for years but it's been a fun twist.

That's a nice find, enjoy.
Don't overthink the strop and whetstones, there are tons of good stones on Amazon, strop is less than 50 bucks, stones dependent on the size of the set you get, but still, not much at all. |
