I'm sure this is just a coincidence.

A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns.

As many viruses as they’ve had start up there over the years I don’t ever recall a quarantine like this. Makes you wonder how bad it really is.
Hell I could see China willing to go in and kill millions to prevent the spread of this and they wouldn’t bat an eye.

Yes, this one is getting... interesting.

Normally, it's bird flu, monkey pox, or whatever and wall-to-wall "we all might die!!" coverage, which is a good sign it's nothing. This time, most of the coverage I see is tilting towards "this will be under control fast, don't worry".

In my lifetime, I can't recall a quarantine on ONE city, much less multiple cities with a combined population of 20 mil.

Really not sure what to make of this.

It’s the 6th or 7th largest city in China depending the source.

That's the unsettling part.

We get flu outbreaks all the time, couple of thousand people with compromised immune systems die, people move on and talk about a nasty flu season. Quarantining a major population center and adding to that?

Seems odd.

Wuhan has a GDP of $224 billion.

You don't shut down a city with a GDP of San Diego or Denver  without a damn good reason.

Is snake to human transmission a very significant finding/factor when it comes to viruses?

Link to an article on drudge regarding a study that there is evidence it went from bats to snakes to humans.

https://www.studyfinds.org/chinese-coronavirus-outbreak-traced-back-to-snakes-study-finds/

So, while the very beginnings of 2019-nCoV appear to be linked to bats, researchers also found evidence that the coronavirus at some point made its way into snakes before ultimately reaching human patient zero. It was this aforementioned ability to recombine within the viral receptor-binding protein that likely facilitated the virus’ cross-species transmission from snakes to humans.

that is right.

if you take into account that deaths lag onset of symptoms 1-2 weeks.

17 deaths announced yesterday and 1-2 weeks ago there were somewhere around 100 cases or less, the actual fatality rate is probably between 15-20%.

and it spreads as easily   as the common cold.

Now they have 7 cities quarantined.

The numbers must be much worse than the govt is saying.

longer lag times between onset and death makes the fatality rate go up
