A few weeks ago I was doing a Google on Deuce 1/2 and 5 ton trucks. And came across some EVIL pictures of
armored convoy escorts.Nothing says business like a armor plated Deuce 1/2 with 3 .50 machine guns and a mini gun on it. After a few hours of reading they learned to double hull (the cargo/gun area)to protect the gunners from B40 rockets. Then in early 70/71 they went ape shit and put M113 hulls on the backs of some trucks Its a good read and of course lots of pictures. http://academic.uofs.edu/faculty/gramborw/atav/gunpictures.htm http://grambo.us/atav/default.html |

Some of those trucks had quad .50s An Ambusher's nightmare. My dad told me how they used to call in the quad-.50 gun trucks that the Army had when he was on convoys in VN. Said they would receive some sniper fire from a hill or the tree-line, and the quad-.50s would just destroy the area with the fire they put out. Then they would be on their way again...... |

As cool as it is, alot of those convoys got their asses handed to them. The NVA liked to ambush convoys.

|
Last one looks like a 113 hull strapped down in the bed of the truck.........somethings changes and some just stay the same...soldiers been rigging scrap armor for protection for awhile.

Those gun trucks and Vietnam experiences are where sci-fi author David Drake got the central elements of his Hammer's Slammers series of military sci-fi stories.

The .50s (or possibly the mounts themselves) have been rigged to use belt feed from a box instead of the spring-wound coffin mags originally designed for anti-aircraft work. |

Sad thing is, I think only ONE actual gun truck made it back from Vietnam.
There's a handful of reproductions around the country, tho. One is in Austin. If I get a whole bunch of play money and can't think of anything else to do with it, I might buy a bunch of steel and get my buddy to cut out the armor plate sections on his cnc plasma cutter. |

Here is some original Vietnam home movie footage of a gun truck with
not only .50 cals but a mini-gun mounted and it shows them lighting stuff up prior to mission very interesting from a historical point alone.......... Vietnam footage |

The VC and (to a lesser extent) the NVA were among the finest light infantry jungle fighters in history. That was one of their true strengths.
However, again and again and again, any examination of the Vietnam War reveals what America's great strength was in that conflict: FIREPOWER! Great pictures, thanks. |

The practice of mounting Ma Deuces's on trucks/halftracks started up during WWII as air defense. But Charlie likes them too!

The M-706 was suppose to replace the gun trucks (which were originally a stop gap measure) but it never happened. The M1117 is the latest incarnation and has been used in Iraq. |

These M55 trucks were also attached to D Battery 1st-44 ART my Dad was in at Dong Ha back in '69. He was a traveling mechanic but had to work mainly on the M42 Duster. He was telling me the guys on these M55 trucks were hardcore. They were really tight knit and self dependent. They did everything on these trucks and didn't ask anybody else nuthing! Don't have any pics of the 50's but here's a pic of a Duster Dad had to change the engine out at Hamburger Hill shortly after the main battle:
My Dad on the left down front. Good read Dad said the Vulcan M16A1 equipped M113A1s would have been a hoot to but never saw them until he got back stateside. |

You guys shoulda seen the shit that rolled around Mosul, Iraq back in 2004! My companys trucks coulda given those vietnam guntrucks a run for their money!
Iron Maiden - BMP Hull cut in half and welded to the back of a 5-ton dumptruck, with a .50 and a MK19 mounted togehter on the ring mount, and two holes cut out by the headache board for SAWs. Strykertruck - 5-ton dump with a welded steel box surrounding the bed, with Stryker slat armor welded all the way around and 5 gun ports to a side Unknown A. Co truck - Steel welded to dump bed in the fashion of castle parapets with 4 mercedes front seats welded to the floor so the shooters can recline and shoot in fashion. 240 mount on rear tailgate, SAW mount on headache board. The list goes on and on. ETA I will attempt to find pics from my buddies and my harddrive to post later. Stay tuned for EPIC badassery 2004 edition. |

We had Bang Bus written in sidewalk chalk in BIG letters on the back of our RG-33 this last tour and no one cared. Also, dear god, the shit we wrote on our trucks/painted/engraved would have made a chaplain cry our first tour in '04! |

Ok, i managed to find two pics, how do i go about uploading them?

Did you happen to see a S&S 5-ton with a armor bed kit on it? The sides of the kit were very thick aluminum (floor was steel) with 4 240 mounts and 3 ,50 cal mounts. Two on the side and one seat mount facing rear words. Also troops faced outwards... We did a few and they were sent over there |

We had all 5-ton dumps so we just welded shit on however we wanted. We had an Iraqi Tank Battalions worth of dead armor in a graveyard to use so we had all kinda stuff. Being Engineers we just did whatever. |
