E 2/179th Inf. Edit; Dad was on Old Baldy in the summer of 52. Chinese stacked like cordwood was a phrase I heard him use. Green flies the size of half dollars. On June 16, the 179th Infantry Regiment relieved the 180th on Old Baldy. For the next 10 days, the Chinese repeatedly attempted to retake the high ground. "Mostly they tried to get the hill by overwhelming us," recalls Lee Keir, radio operator with Weapons Plt., C Co., 179th Regt. "Sometimes their infantry would come rushing in while their own artillery shells were still landing. When we raised our heads, there they were." On June 26, U.S. leaders decided to assault the enemy position––barely a thousand feet from the crest of the hill. U.S. troops met stiff resistance, and the battle for Old Baldy escalated to a fever pitch. Darkness did nothing to quell the battle, with GIs turning back three separate Chinese attacks the night of June 27. Late the next night, a Chinese force estimated at two reinforced battalions attacked again, broke through the U.S. defenses, and engaged the GIs in hand-to-hand fighting. That assault ended with a Chinese withdrawal, but not before the enemy lost an estimated 700 men. That's compared to eight U.S. dead and 35 WIA. More enemy attacks in early July also were repulsed. Yet that would not be the end of fighting on this treeless hill. |

My great uncle Lt. Edward L. Wilsey is the third from the left. That is his P51-B during WWII. ETA: Spelling Lt. Edward L. Wilsey poses with two of his ground crew (R-L) Sgt. Vincent F. Family friend Sam Wheeler also in B-20 Mobile Strike Force. This says badassery with arrogance and style.....

SERGEANT, UNITED STATES ARMY, Company B, APO 96318, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, APO 96240 Awarded: Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device Date action: 19 February 1969 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Reason: For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant Wheeler distinguished himself by valorous actions on 19 February 1969 while serving as a platoon leader and advisor to an indigenous platoon that was clearing a river bank. The enemy initiated contact from the opposite bank of the river with a heavy volume of automatic weapons and machinegun fire. Sergeant Wheeler had previously sent a squad to the enemy side of the river to secure it. Knowing these personnel were in grave danger, he formed his troops into an assault line and led them across the forty meter wide, waist-deep water completely disregarding the enemy and his own personal safety. He closed with the enemy causing them to flee. While in pursuit of the enemy his radio operator was severely wounded. Sergeant Wheeler applied first aid, and, taking the radio he regrouped his men, took charge to see all wounded were cared for, and led his troops back across the river. He then secured an LZ, called in the medevac helicopter and directed the fire of the gunships on the enemy positions. Sergeant Wheeler’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, Special Forces and the United States Army. |

You know that is my tank, right? Took me forever to color in those fucking letters with a tiny chunk of chalk. Here is a picture of one of my LCPLs bothering a sleeping Beans! You can still make out some of the lettering.
