All - I am enlisting the help of the hive mind to identify my great-grandfather's NYFD badge.  My father is doing a lot of genealogy research and came upon this mystery badge of his grandfather's...

My great-grandfather was in Engine Co. 40 and we cannot figure out the significance of the "94" badge.  At the time, there was Engine Co. 94 in the Bronx, but he worked in Manhattan in the early 1900s.  A New York Times article from March 1910 actually mentions him by name as responding to a fire on W65th St.

Any ideas of the significance of the badge?  The NYC Fireman's Museum couldn't ID it.

may have been his badge number. I belong to 113, but my "badge" number is 226. Badge number=ID number

Engine 94 of Engine Co. 40? Other than that, i do not know.  But the book seems like a good idea.

It may be his station/unit number.  IE Ladder 94 or Station 94.

Did he start in 1894???        Just my 2 cents

Is it possible he worked at 94, and then transferred to 40?... Did he spend his whole career with 40 from the time he was a rookie?

I'm with this. Possibly one of multiple badges he wore during his career. Dig deeper.

Eng 40 was in the Lincoln Square area of Manhattan and also housed Ladder 35 if I'm not mistaken, they were there since july of 1874.

Engine 94 was humpin and pumpin in the Bronx since 1913.

Here is a great resource for searching out the history.

A couple folks said to call the Badge Desk for FDNY in this thread.

Badge thread from another board

I'd bet that was a badge number not a unit or station number.  Did he ever get promoted?

I've only seen badge numbers as badge numbers; stations, assignment, or units go on helmets.

FDNY phone list

ETA the badge desk is located under personnel
