I'm going with Border Collie. My brother has one, that dog herds his kids and the neighbors kids pretty well

We got our blue heeler when we lived in Ft. Worth. She has lived in a hot weather environment ever since. Give them plenty of water and they will do fine.

She was a short woman with two large dogs and she had warn repair men never to take an angry tone with her or raise their hands......otherwise, the dogs might have something to say about it. Obviously, you want to look at the herding breeds. Do not discount the GSD; they can still do their original job.

I'd go with an Aussie like others have said, unless you need a larger dog to scare/kill predators. Then it gets more complicated.

I was talking more in terms of coyotes and such being a threat to your livestock, which would require a livestock guarding breed (and more than one of them, at that). Aussies are very smart and quick dogs, but they weren't bred to deter and fight predators. |

We have a pair of blue heelers and an australian shepherd/border collie mix. They live to herd. When they aren't out working cattle with me, they practice keeping my twin boys out of trouble.
We shipped 1125 head last week, just over 1M pounds. If I didn't have the dogs to help, I would have had to hire at least two extra hands to handle the work...maybe three. They definitely earn their keep around here. |

AKA - Blue Lacy or Lacy Game Dog. The only dog suitable for a ranch in Texas. ETA: to clarify this is a Tier 1 ranch dog. The breeders are very selective who they will sell a dog to. |

I don't post too much but, wanted to step in on this one. Look at the lacey dog, I
am getting a blue lacey to help track blood trails, find sheds and some other things to help at our ranch in the hill country. They were bred to work cattle but, are used for hunting activities any more. They weredeveloped in Texas for Texans.
