I just went to buy the $600 HF Vertical Milling machine and it does not show up on their website.

Last week I could swear they had 3 different models.

$600, $1100, $2000.

Now all they have is the $2000 model.

If they are out of something does it not show up until back in stock?

I could swear it was onsale for $550 and now it is not their?

Have I lost my mind?

They are reducing the number of items they carry.

Instead of having 15 different vices, they'll just have 3.

And especially in terms of the larger items, big reductions there.

Caveat: I used the machine to upgrade itself, and built it into a cnc. I am an experienced engineer and machinist - getting the machine to do this requires some practice and knowhow. It is, however, absolutely possible with the right understanding. I have done steel parts, stainless steel parts, and all sorts of interesting things with this machine.

If you want to skip some grief, OP, the LMS mini mill has some upgrades from the get-go that make life easier. The solid column design is a WORLD of difference.

ETA: that's a 0%, not an 80%

Grizzly has that for $650

decisions.

The LMS machine has a bigger table and different (read: FAR better and quieter) motor drive, IIRC. There are plenty of things LMS sells that are precisely equal to, but more expensive than Grizzly, but their machines are better quality from what I've seen. The difference was worth it to me, but I needed a cnc for my original purposes for the machine.

Yeah, Little Machine Shop. If you're looking for a benchtop jobbie, it's a good little machine for that class.

ETA: Also realize you'll wind up spending as much in tooling as you did on the original machine. But that's another discussion all together - trust me, machining as a hobby is worse than brd.

I was just looking at that, they have one that the column tilts 45 degrees.

Man this is like everything else, what I want just keeps getting more expensive

I really want to just hollow out some lowers, but I already have thought of other stuff I would like to make.

Don't get the tilting column. Ruins the stiffness of the machine (one of the most significant weaknesses of the small machine as it is), and you'll NEVER use the tilting column feature. Also, they're a pain to tram.

Frieght was $200 to Texas,  would have been a grand even for me. The HF with upgaded belt drive was $650 after shipping. Both for a Sieg X3.

Buy a few good files instead.

Can it be done with files?

That's all they used to use in Afghanistan before the Russians arrived.  You could buy just about any gun you wanted in the bazaars.

Be ready to stretch your sore forearms

But yes, you'd be amazed at what you can do with a good set of files. I can work a hell of a lot faster with my mill though

Littlemachineshop is closing out their X3 mills

http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2919&category=

Part Number: 2919
Weight: 400.00 lb
$1195.95 On Sale
Regularly $1495.95

Shipping is anywhere from $60 to $200 depending on how far you are from SoCal, BUT if you are near Michigan or PA, you can pick it up at one of the two upcoming shows for $50.

What's New!

No Snow at Cabin Fever Expo

Cabin Fever Expo, the show for home shop machinists and model engineers who want to freeze their patooties in Pennsylvania in January, has come to its senses. This year the show moves to springtime. Same great location (Toyota Arena at York Fairgrounds in York, PA) at a new time of year (April 12-14, 2013). We'll be there again this year--but with fewer layers of clothing. We look forward to seeing you there too.

NAMES is Coming!

The 24th annual exposition of the North American Model Engineering Society will be held April 20-21, 2013 at the Yack Arena, 3131 3rd Street, Wyandotte, Michigan. You and I call it NAMES Expo, and it's just south of Detroit.

Pick Up Your Order at the Show to Save on Shipping

You can save on shipping by picking up your order at either of the two shows where we'll be exhibiting in April (Cabin Fever Expo, April 12-14, York, PA; NAMES Expo, April 20-21 in Wyandotte, MI).

For machine orders, we charge a flat fee of $50, which is the marginal cost of adding 200 pounds to our shipment. For orders under 100 pounds, there's no charge for shipping.

To get on the truck, your order must be placed and paid for no later than March 31. When you order, select Will Call as the shipping method, and in the Special Instructions box, let us know that you'll pick up your order at the show. (Be sure you specify which show!)

This is the big brother to the SX2 they had a special on about 6 months ago. They also have some tooling packages to go along with it

I've had the Grizzly mini-mill for about a decade now.   For my space limitations, and for what I do on it, I'm happy with it.
