Hive mind assistance is required, and with the breadth of knowledge here I am pretty confident I can get it!

I'm trying to find a novel I read decades ago.  I believe it was written by a notable sci-fi author and I thought it may have been Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury but after reading a synopsis, I'm doubting that it is so.

What I can remember is that the main character was a boy (pre- or early teens) and kids were going missing in a woods that ran through the town.  I seem to recall there was a ravine or a hill in the woods, something to do with the protaganist running to get away from whatever was in the woods and fighting elevation changes.  I also seem to recall that the kid(s) knew that the woods were dangerous but used them anyway, always thinking that they wouldn't be the one(s) to get taken.

Hive Mind... any ideas?

Sounds vaguely like Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury.

Thanks for the response, but reading Wikipedia synopsis, that is not it.
I'm trying to find a novel to read tomorrow and this one is stuck in my mind.

It's not The Girl who Liked Tom Gordon.  That's  20 years or more too new to be the one I'm trying to remember.

Unfortunately, no.  Does anyone know if Dandelion Wine may have had this in it?

The one with the pyscho clown that destroyed the town every 50 years.  Kids kill him with a silver bullet from a slingshot, molded from a silver dollar.

Geekz0r,  I'll give that a shot. My first recollection was that it was Dandelion Wine so I'm hopeful you're right.
Thanks,  all.

Thanks, had kids in a Ravine and my brain locked there

ETA:  I read that once, probably in 1986 or 87 looking a wiki

I have a life long goal of never going to Maine.  Read way to many Stephen King books in the 80s

No seriously, don't want to go to Maine.

good luck.  i know what it's like to try to find a book when you don't remember the author or title.  back in the early 90s I didn't have the internet to help (not that it was very advanced back then anyway) ... I tried that.  All I knew was the color of the binder and a line from the blurb on the back of the book.

it took me 5 years to find it.  granted i wasn't searching constantly, just every time i went to a book store...  but yeah, 5 years.
