When I decided to start carrying when running, I decided to carry my NAA mini revolver in an armband case designed for an I-device.

See if sheik djbouti here has any more Camelbak Goblin ccw waist packs.  They're great, and can also haul 25oz water in a bladder, AND a fullsize M&P 9mm with spare mags.

Ruger LCP with pocket clip, or a good holster and bam done. I personally use a PF9 and a bianchii IWB holster and have run several half marathons with it.

Dont buy her anything. Let her pick it out!

But whatever it is, put it in a Galco Escort pack.

LCP

You could probably get away with stuffing it in a thong and jogging with it.

It's not the end all be all handgun, but nobody is going to force you into a van and rape you with a couple of 380 slugs in their chest or groin.

Agree.  She needs to pick her own sidearm.  However, the method of carry must be comfortable to her.

One thing she may want to get a non-steel sidearm.  If she uses a belly band, it's going to be exposed to a lot of sweat that will rust the gun.

S&W Model 60 2.125".

Lightweight, doesn't worry about sweat, will go bang every time, and can have good manstopping rounds. If she's slight of frame, just roll with .38 +Ps otherwise, .357.

My wife runs with a Sig  P938 but she's comfortable with guns. A Smith J-Frame is the most simple but those things may be too much for a female shooter.

Ruger LCP is 9 oz's unloaded, under a pound at 15 oz's fully loaded.  It's what my wife uses.  It's not a .45 like most would like to suggest, but it'll do the job if necessary.  The controversy over whether a .380 is suitable for SD is silly!  At the very least, being shot by a .380 is going to hurt like hell and most bad guys aren't going to wait around to see if the woman is an Annie Oakley.

The LCP my wife has is pretty accurate at SD ranges too.  We load it with Federal Hydra-shok's.

LCR.....I just bought one for my wife 2 months ago.  I was really surprised how shootable it is considering it's sub 14 oz. weight.  Must be the "Tamer" grips that they use.  I used to have a 642 that I hated to practice with....every shot felt like a wasp sting to the hand.

That's weird because I own not one but two LCP's and both weigh 12 ounces loaded.

Nano 9mm from Beretta - lighter than the Shield if I recall, and absolutely nothing to get snagged on (no slide release or safety).

I think this is the only real option for a female jogger. That or a KelTec P3AT or P32.

If the gun is too heavy or too bulky she wont carry it. Plus spare magazines are lightweight and low profile.

Find something lighter than a S&W 340 M&P, then buy it. If not that is where I would start. Load it with good 38pd ammo and run.

For many years I carried a Smith 642 in a small fanny pack while I was running. It was not a gun specific pack, just the smallest one I could find. I wore it on the front and my shirt covered it. The gun gets sweat soaked but who cares. During about 20 years of running with it I drew it on one junkie and one chow dog. I was glad i had it both times.

The 642 can be snappy with top loads so I would let her shoot it with target wadcutters for practice. The cylinder release can shred your thumb knuckle if you don't shoot "thumbs up" style. The 642 will be more forgiving of neglect than a pocket automatic.

I use a 642 for trotting up and down the roads or trails, in a Blackhawk IWB.  Nice and light and won't move once I got my drawstring tied.

It might be the difference in the weight of the bullets you use or whether you keep a full mag. with one in the pipe.  Personally, I never weighed ours, I was just going by what Ruger said when we bought it.    Sorry to cause an outrage over 3 oz's

Outrage??
Hardly.
I just thought it was strange that his was 3 ounces heavier than two of mine.
3 ounces difference in a gun that little would mean something was way different with his.
And the difference in seven 90 gr. bullets and seven 95 gr. bullets does not close that 3 ounce gap.
Carry on sir.

I'm a 135 pound runner and I'm not sure what I'd be willing to carry. I currently don't carry when I run, but I operate under the maxim that anyone big enough to kick my ass isn't fast enough to catch me.

My smallest pistol is a Beretta Nano and I think it would be too big to carry comfortably when running in the summer. Maybe a Ruger LCP or a Kel-tec P3AT in the small of the back.
