If you take the race angle out of his comments, it makes more sense. Look at slavery in the ancient world.
A slave could buy his freedom. (unfortunately, he was not guaranteed this ability, but most had access to it, hopefully). High value slaves were often purchased and freed, provided that they served their master. (kind of strange, but the patron/client relationship is much better than the master/slave relationship). Yes, I think the practice of slavery went downhill after ancient times. (And, I don't think much of it from the beginning, other than it was better to enslave POWs than to simply kill them).) I am not defending what he said. I believe the welfare state as currently practiced harms all races. I do believe every one would be better served by a study of history. (Not necessarily Spartacus, but that was entertaining). Look at slavery before it was based on heathenism, and look at chattel slavery practiced during and prior to the mid 19th century. Though, in the long run, it doesn't matter. No matter what mechanism you use, some people are useless. In ancient times, those people died young. Nowadays, they live a long time, and consume actual resources. As much as I hate recommending it, I believe the federal gov't should be the last employer of resource. Workers should have to do something mind numbing and difficult. (more or less what I do for private industry). Moving rocks around, and then re-arranging them might work.. Yes, I know my beliefs won't be popular. I believe that you work toward pushing the rock further, or help those who push the rock, or help the families of those who push the rock. If you entertain those who push the rock, that is OK. Otherwise, you are just in the way. |
