My personal opinion is that the gun will average below .5 MOA and regularly turn in sub .25

"Shoots so well the rifle could circumcise a gnat" was always one I liked.

Something like 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 MOA ought to do it.

I've always heard it used in sports (basketball and pool-if you consider that a sport)

However I'm sure it was originally a shooting phrase. One link suggested it was being able to shoot the flame off the candle without touching the wax.

If that's the case....1/2 MOA will do inside 100yards. Outside that? 1/4 MOA or better from a "rail gun "

How long ago did it become technologically feasible to repeatedly shoot 1/2" at 100?

I don't hear it often, but I consider it equal to a cleaned target with at least half the shots in the X-ring.

Joking aside: I consider .5moa or less (at a minimum of 100yards) to be impressive.

And it's got to be provable, not just what gun writers like to spout. Because every rifle will magically do 1moa with Wolf, if the gun writers are to be believed.

Its the internet, so by hitting the 16" x 20" @ 100 yards paper more then once is considered accurrate by many,  "Shoots Lights Out" could mean anything from sub moa to 20 moa

Mark, Virgil King knew the answer.
Google "Secrets of the Houston Warehouse" or click here; http://www.angelfire.com/ma3/max357/houston.html

It is a long but good read and will help you put more death in your death rays.

There was a guy out east of town trying to shoot out a street lamp about 300 yards away with his 7mm Remington.

Never did get it, but he shot a pretty nice group on a neighbors refrigerator door beyond it.

I'm asking to establish the time frame in which this term could have originated if it was created to describe shooting out a candle, instead of being appropriated for such meaning.

If, for example, this term was in use in 1750 and such a shot could not exist until 1900, then the term was probably not created to describe shooting a candle.
