Apparently a leaked photo of the Air Traffic Control screen showing 36300 ft and climbing but only 353 knots.
Apparently this is bad

Why is that bad?

With a lower speed he could be descending, maneuvering, climbing, etc. Granted, I believe that may be below the stall speed at that altitude.

Helios Airways 522

Two F-16 fighter aircraft from the Hellenic Air Force 111th Combat Wing were scrambled from Nea Anchialos Air Base to establish visual contact.[19] They intercepted the passenger jet at 11:24 and observed that the first officer was slumped motionless at the controls and the captain's seat was empty.[20] They also reported that oxygen masks were dangling in the passenger cabin.[18]

At 11:49, flight attendant Andreas Prodromou entered the cockpit and sat down in the captain's seat, having remained conscious by using a portable oxygen supply.[21][22] Prodromou held a UK Commercial Pilot License,[23] but was not qualified to fly the Boeing 737. Crash investigators concluded that Prodromou's experience was insufficient for him to gain control of the aircraft under the circumstances.[22]

However, in any case, he did not have time to save the stricken aircraft. Almost as soon as he entered the cockpit, the left engine flamed out due to fuel exhaustion,[22] the plane left the holding pattern and started to descend.[24] Ten minutes after the loss of power from the left engine, the right engine also flamed out,[24] and just before 12:04 the aircraft crashed into hills near Grammatiko.[24] There were no survivors.

I'm not an aviator but would guess that is not enough speed to maintain lift.
Isn't that what happened to another scarebus that crashed in the ocean a few years ago? Pilot thought he was going much faster than reality?

That's essentially what happened, though the alarm system contributed to the problem. More important is that he should have lowered the nose because holding the stick back forever will make the plane stall and forever will only last as long as your altitude divided by your descent rate.

The fact is AMERICA has the best all-around record for commercial flights in the world. You'd have to be really stupid to press your luck when it comes to flying. Or a communist. So go ahead and give me some fluffed up numbers from some other country with a better "flight record ".

My good friend and neighbor is a senior captain at AA, and he's retiring early because he says he doesn't know why the hell there aren't smoking holes in the ground every 60-90 days. He also doesn't allow his family to fly. The stories he's shared about how airlines actually run and some of his close calls are flat out horrifying.

Don't believe that for a second.

I flew in a flatbed on an Air Asia flight from Sydney to KL in June for about $350 one way.  That's about the same price as Sydney to Tamworth (1hr flight via turboprop) via Qantaslink one way.

I have no idea how they do it at that price, but I sure as fuck wasn't complaining when I was having a great sleep flying through the Asian Triangle.

We have controllers here who can answer, but I can't imagine why the ATC screen would show indicated airspeed. It can vary from the ground speed by fifty or more knots and it changes. Groundspeed will tell you where the plane will actually be in ten minutes.

I have a friend who used to work for Emirates.  She hated it.  Joined to see the world while getting paid but passengers (especially Arabs) just abuse stewardesses and treat them like dirt.  That and Arabs treat tall blonde Aussie girls like something they can buy in Dubai.

Wasn't there a crash (no idea how long ago) where .mil pilots or some shit went up to meet the airline when they stopped responding, and they saw all the oxygen masks had deployed but everybody was frozen?  Or am I making that up?

Wow shit deal a pilot but still couldn't do anything. Wonder if he had blacked for a long period and happen to wake up shame he didn't have more time

Compare how many aircraft qatas has with our SMALLEST airline and their flight schedule. Then get back to me. Sure, a little company-relatively speaking- will have a smaller accident incident, but if you're good at math, which yo me, it doesn't seem like you are, the numbers speak for themselves. USA! USA!

I don't smoke anything but fine, aged cigars. So maybe they are almost equal to American flight standards, I don't know, I guess they would be my preferred carrier over there. But still:     USA! USA!  USA

Quantas is huge.  Fly globally sometime.

20th largest airline company in the world is nothing to sneeze at. They move about 26 million passengers a year. Sure, its not united. But they're bigger then JetBlue or frontier.

But who would want to leave the USA?

USA! USA!

Clearly I do.

Land down under is one of my trips in the next two or three years. After the Bahamas every year as normal, going to Norway, and Canada for moose hunting.

But yeah I get your point.
Never mind me.  I'm just imitating our friend over there who keeps chanting USA! USA! about damn near everything and insisting everything American is the best

American, United, SouthWest, Delta Are the top 4.... By a lot. But that's kinda to be expected.

But again, Qantas is nothing to sneeze at. My parents flew them all over Australia when they were there for two months.

... as well, foreign airliners are typically much more comfortable then US ones. Just saying.  British airways 747 was one of the nicest planes I've ever been on.

  Damn unions!

I have a friend who used to work for Emirates.  She hated it.  Joined to see the world while getting paid but passengers (especially Arabs) just abuse stewardesses and treat them like dirt.  That and Arabs treat tall blonde Aussie girls like something they can buy in Dubai.

The aircraft would not let the pilots fly it, not tell them the problem. Airbus does not trust pilots.

BTW QANTAS used to build their own planes before United was even thought of. Its not a fly by night company.

The ACI episode indicated that 3 out of 4 portable oxygen tanks (with ~1hr capacity) appeared to have been used; likely by Prodromou.

The AA flight that crashed right after 9-11 was due to loss of rudder also.

If you're talking about AF 447, the auto-pilot kicked off and the co-pilot was causing the stalll by pulling back on the stick practically the whole way down.

I remember hearing that, keep forgetting to look into it.  I heard a few theories about a 'shoe bomber' that succeeded.

"too many to remember" huh?

GPS

Radar Altimeter

Artificial Horizon

Flight Computers

Any of the above should have provided the FO a clue, In an Airbus the computers fly the plane, and if they have not expected the problem like Pitot ice then the plane will give the pilots a wrong answer. It will also prevent full travel of control surfaces, Boeing last I heard still allows the pilots to use the full limits of available controls.

Australia. 226 years old and still a sovereign state.

Texas. Lasted for about 10 years and a non-functional failed state. Even Sierra Leone laughs at you.
