I'm going camping this weekend. I'm sleeping on an air mattress and am taking my queen-sized comforter as bedding.

In the past, it seems like the comforter is always damp when I return to camp in the evening. I've been told this is condensation (no, nobody is pissing on it).

Will storing my bedding in the closed cab of my truck during the day prevent this dampness? If not, what can I do to keep them dry?

EDIT: I have an am using a tent

Thank you,
M

Use a tent in case it rains.  The tent should be ventilated.

When you get out of bed in the morning, if it is dry outside, air out the bedding while it is still warm from your body.

Sometimes there is no way to prevent dampness.  You just have to use something that is warm when wet and air it out when you can.

Get a bivi bag.

Get actual goretex, not some knock-off material. And don't buy military surplus or anything used. Odds are there will be a hole in it.

If you intend to be sleeping in the rain, get one that has an internal support to keep the fabric out of your face. Without one it's basically self-induced waterboarding.

It is condensation, when you first roll out of the rack, hang it to air out.  Leave it airing out while you are eating breakfast / getting ready for the day.  It would be best if you could leave it to air out all day, but if not, fold and stow in cab of truck. Also, leave your tent open to air out as well.

Make sure the tent has proper air circulation.  Your breath builds up moisture in the tent if not ventilated.  Air out bedding during the day, when possible.

Go outside and jerk it before you go to sleep

Your comfort or is made from cotton, it is absorbing the moisture from the air,  everything gets damp after sunset. Get a real sleeping bag and keep it closed up until it is time to go to bed.

This is always sound advice but what does it have to do with the question at hand?

Awesome; thanks. Air it out when I get out of bed, then fold it up and put it in the truck (keeping it in the cab of the truck during the day makes sense to me in that it will be hot, therefore moisture won't condense on it)

Thanks guys/gals,
M

You need airflow in the tent and you need to air your bedding out in the sun around midday.

Most inexpensive tents are cheaply constructed and use small mesh windows to vent the tent.  You have to be careful to set this up so the cross breeze will flow through the tent.  I have a Bid Agnes Seedhouse that uses a "bathtub" nylon bottom and the top is all mesh.  If you can find something constructed like this, it is far more forgiving at site placement and orientation.

Make sure the fly sits off the mesh/nylon by a couple inches and lets plenty of air move through.  I take the fly off during the day and let the sun finish drying everything inside of the tent.

A big problem I see is that people don't use their guylines effectively, if at all.  They should be taught and allow air to move between the tent and the fly.

If you know it is going to be wet, and you're car camping, you can sometimes be better off leaving the fly at home and bringing a big hardware store tarp and make a lean-to over your tent.  It'll keep the rain off, allow air to move around the tent, and if you bring a big enough tarp, let you set up some camp chairs out of the rain.  Make sure to hang the tarp high enough you can stand up straight.  Nothing worse than being cold and damp, than being cold, damp, and feeling cramped.

I think some of us lived in tents, for extended periods of time.  Thank you Uncle Sugar, we enjoyed it so much.

I don't believe in tents.  I use my poncho for a hooch if it is raining.  I stay dryer than the others in tents.  I go camping every month.

When I pull up my poncho hooch in the morning, there is a big rectangular dry spot on the ground, and it takes me less than a minute to break down my hooch.

I then get to chuckle to myself as the other campers suffer though the ordeal of coming to terms with how much they got soaked inside their tents, and the pain of trying to pack up everything with wet hands and gear.

Air out your bedding during the day if it's relatively dry outside.  I like to keep my bedding stored inside a stuff sack on rainy days.  Also, if your comforter is cotton it's probably the worst choice of fabric.  A couple of surplus wool blankets would be a big improvement.

Leave the comforter at home, or hang it out to dry on a line during the day.

vent the tent as much as you can during the day and night. If its damp hang it on a line all day and move it in before dusk.

What self-respecting man takes a comforter camping?

To be fair, there has been times during winter FTX's that I wished I had a comforter.

If it is sealed and hot - the moisture won't go anywhere.  Its not about heat.

Try not to go camping when it rains.

Last summer my dad and I took my daughter and my niece camping for a couple nights on a road trip to see my brother.

It rained like a son of a bitch and we had a flooded tent and soaking wet bedding. It kind of sucked at the time.

Use fleece blankets instead of your comforter.
