Found this growing out of a phone pedestal.

For size reference the pedal is about 12" x 12" square. Not the normal small 9nes that are 6x6 or so.

This was a pretty big tree.

I don't know but I'm guessing the orange paint means it is marked for a trimming.

I think it was yellow. I think the gas lines run under there.

Actually  orange is used to mark phone catv and other low / non voltage lines.

But I think it was yellow.

Catalpa, should have seed pods that resemble a 16" green bean.

The worm turns into a Catalpa Sphinx moth

My grandpa had one in his yard and we used the worms for fishing

It's a fishing worm tree - aka catalpa tree as others have mentioned

Edit:  You can also freeze the worms, then unthaw them before your fishing trip, and cut into pieces as you need them for your fishing hook

They are excellent for fishing. Mine did the same thing. We would catch catfish by the dozen with them, even when nothing else worked.

Dang. Learn something new errrday.

I didn't see any, but didn't look for caterpillars.

Oh well, won't be seeing g that tree ever again. Don't normally work that area of town and just happened upon it.

Are they Similar  to the tobacco horned worms I had on my tomatoes?

They only eat the leaves of the catalpa tree.  Excellent fish bait.  Where I grew up, almost everybody had at least one of these trees.  Sometime in the early eighties, most everyone cut their trees down for some reason.  Lately, I'm seeing more and more of them.
