Why call a University a college when it's a University?

In the United States, community colleges, sometimes called junior colleges, technical colleges, two-year colleges, or city colleges, are primarily two-year public institutions providing higher education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees.

Prob tradition. Elon University here in NC used to be called Elon College.

No one here refers to College=University.

anyone talking about "college" means Community College. 2 year college.

Anyone says "i'm going to the University" means something like "University of Florida".

College can refer to a stand alone institution of learning that does not offer graduate degrees (or in many cases, bachelors) or a subdivision of an institution of research and learning.

Examples:

Bumfuck Community College (implies 2 year degrees)

Bumfuck College (implies 4 year degrees)

The College of Bullshit at Bumfuck university (implies research is done there, and that there is a graduate program).

This is not fool proof. Some states have public universities with separate college that don't give out graduate degrees.

"Going to college" means going to a place that gets you a 4-year degree. At least in my usage and as used when I was growing up.

ETA: We used to say "college student." Never heard "university student." At least in common usage.

Because it's how society uses the words?

In my usage, universities and 2yr schools are both colleges, but 2yr colleges are definitely not universities. In America we don't say "my son is going off to university" we always say college, even though we mean a 4 year university. However, in the UK they say university (or "uni").

For the average person it applies to both 2 yr. and 4yr. institutions. In the education arena it could be a 2yr. College or a College within a University. Those Universities would normally have Graduate programs.
