Told my dad I was interested in ham radio. He's had this radio for years and doesn't use it anymore.

I have just the radio, no charger. I am a complete noob when it comes to radios. Can this be used for ham radio? Model XPR 6550.

looks like commercial, business band  motorola handheld.

likely 450 mc business band.

.

.

looks like there are 2 versions,  a VHF and  a UHF model.

Programming any modern Motorola is  going  to be a proprietary bitch.

If you want an amateur radio, buy an amateur radio.

ICOM, Yaesu, Kenwood, and a bunch of cheap chinese  units are available.

Most likely useful for UHF (70cm band) Amateur radio both regular FM and DMR, as well as GMRS. The model number will confirm what it will do. Is programmed with a PC with a programming cable.

What you have there will sell on ebay for $200-300 range.

The XPR-6550 is a MOTOTRBO radio that can be used on the ham band for FM and DMR (digital) communications.  It would be an interesting radio to have if there are any ham DRM repeaters in your area.  The MOTOTRBO group on Yahoo Groups is full of information on using these radios on the ham bands.  Depending on the model you have if may work on the 2m or 70cm ham bands.

This strongly implies that you are neither licensed nor  qualified to operate there.

.

No offense,  start your study in the  amateur radio forum.

.

A cheep chinese radio  complete, and ready to operate  will be cheaper than a charger and program cable for the Motorola.

If you have a ham radio DMR repeater that is near by, there are all different ham talk groups that you can access with it via the repeater.  DRM repeaters support two channels at the same time.

I'm a general and I admit I didn't catch the megacycle reference either.

That said, I think you can relax.  I don't think OP suggested that he was going to immediately go out and start checking in on local nets.  I think he just wanted to know what he had and how one, if inclined to do so, might utilize it.

Motorola XPR 6550 Models

AAH55JDH9LA1AN 136-174 MHz, 5 Watts, 1000 Channels
AAH55QDH9LA1AN 403-470 MHz, 4 Watts, 1000 Channels
AAH55TDH9LA1AN 450-512 MHz, 4 Watts, 1000 Channels

Looks like the model number determines the band coverage.

http://www.daywireless.com/motorola/motorola-xpr6550.htm

Be aware that you must have a HAM license to operate/transmit on ham bands. The radio may be capable of transmitting on other bands
used by public services, etc. that are NOT legal to transmit on even with a HAM license.

Make sure you follow the law.
The FCC has no sense of humor, they have great radio finding equipment, and they hand out HUGE fines for violations.

I will give you $50 for it without a charger.

How did your father end up with it? Can't imagine the company he worked for just let him keep it. Going price for that radio on ebay is $400+

Like others said, get with a local ham group to get started.

450 mc = 450 million cycles per second = 450 MHz.

He sub-contracted out to a company and 2 were left plus the charge dock in the break room.

He told me he'd look for the other radio and charge dock.

Edit: This was 4+ years ago and the company never came back for them.

I was mainly teasing you, nice score, something to build on if you go ham or even grab some others and get a Part 90 license. Too bad GMRS doesn't allow digital.

As others have posted elsewhere, the black radio disease is almost if not more expensive as the black rifle addiction. I am now looking at my own addiction to those /\/\otorola radios. Told there is no cure for either.
