WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced a streamlined and user-friendly web-based aircraft registration process for owners of small unmanned aircraft (UAS) weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and less than 55 pounds (approx. 25 kilograms) including payloads such as on-board cameras.
... Registration is a statutory requirement that applies to all aircraft. Under this rule, any owner of a small UAS who has previously operated an unmanned aircraft exclusively as a model aircraft prior to December 21, 2015, must register no later than February 19, 2016. Owners of any other UAS purchased for use as a model aircraft after December 21, 2015 must register before the first flight outdoors. Owners may use either the paper-based process or the new streamlined, web-based system. Owners using the new streamlined web-based system must be at least 13 years old to register. Yay more gov regulation 
Edited to add... The FAA estimates that in calendar year 2014, 200,000 small unmanned aircraft were operated in the NAS in model aircraft operations. During this period, the FAA received 238 reports of potentially unsafe UAS operations. In order to implement the new streamlined, web-based system described in this IFR, the FAA will incur costs to develop, implement, and maintain the system. Small UAS operators will require time to register and mark their aircraft, and that time has a cost. The total of government and registrant resource cost for small unmanned aircraft registration and marking under this new system is $56 million ($46 million present value at 7 percent) through 2020. I wonder if I should bulk register about 300 craft for free to cover any future purchases?
I also wonder what happens if you don't. I haven't read that far yet. Seems to me to be another dumbass gov plan which does nothing. Have any of the aircraft near miss incidents been able to read numbers on a drone? if a terrorist wanted to fly drones into crowds do you think they'd register? holy moses the government is retarded. |

Oh how nice, $5 registration fee but they're waiving it for the first 30 days.
Registration is valid for 3 years, just like a real aircraft's registration and you must affix a tail number to the model. I cant wait for the FAA to start getting bombarded by thousands of 12-15 year old boys with their drone fleet calling up and asking dumb questions. What's next, we'll need to install Mode-C transponders and ADS-B out by 2020 on model airplanes too?
