Yes. Observed often in Clear Ballistics, and sometimes even in organic gel.

Same shit with submarines when they die underwater. They implode so fast that the air pressure eventually ignites the oxygen and flash fries the whole crew.

Work with him to set up some video of the common polymer tipped bullets at 100, 200 and 300 yards (or further if accuracy allows) to test the "melting tip" claims Hornady came up with.  If you can get a clear shot of a previously sharp tip drooping or deforming due to heat and drag Hornady ought to be willing to pay some cash for the ad copy!

The tip isn't going to droop at 240,000 revolutions per minute. At best, you might be able to get a vague mushroom shape, but out starting around 600 yards.

It would be better visually with a bigger bullet, like a 308. The pics would be interesting.

Thanks for that test!

Awesome video of a devastating round.

I saw InfiniteGrim's video in the ammo forum and was very impressed with his test as well. Someone asked him to take it down, for sure.

I'm looking forward to your 50 gr TSX video.

Can you tell us what velocity you got with that before releasing the video?

I have 1000 of those. Haven't loaded any.

Does anyone load it in a factory round?

sonoluminescence

Again, what is seen in this video is not sonoluminescence.

It is combustion from dieseling of gel vapor (fuel) and oxygen (oxidizer) in the temporary cavity.

Actual sonoluminescence does not involve combustion. It is air excited to the point it emits light without combustion.

In this video, the combustion byproducts, and also the color of the flash, make the fact this is combustion clear.

So why do I always see ballisic gel photos of m855 showing maximum cavity diameter at around 12"-14" penetration? Is this round that much improved? Is this particular gel a different consistency? Is one shot at distance velocity and the other at muzzle velocity?

Yes.

The flash/explosion in the gel hasn't been very well explained so far.  The best explanation I have seen is that the hot bullet vaporizes some of the gel (which is flammable) and between the friction, heat of the bullet, and air being sucked into the temporary stretch cavity, as the TSC collapses it acts like a diesel engine and compresses the mixture of heated gel vapor and air until it explodes. You can see the exhaust gas exiting the entrance hole.

Sonoluminescence can also be found in the collapse of underwater bubbles...

Sonoluminescence is the emission of short bursts of light from imploding bubbles in a liquid when excited by sound.

ETA: Now I understand you meant the fireball! not the "flash of light"

Actually clear gel understates the permanent wound channel a bit, organic gel can be "ripped" by hydraulic pressure and show damage that would not exist in human tissue (like the xtreme penetrators from lehigh). With pistol rounds penetration depth is similar with rifle rounds clear gel will show a little more penetration depth (however that usually isn't an issue with rifle rounds because you aren't walking that 12" FBI line)

Chemist here.  It is definitely "dieseling."  From my research I am reasonably confident that those blocks are composed of a mineral oil gel.  Mineral oil is a petroleum derivative that is to diesel what diesel is to gasoline.  It's not flammable under normal conditions but would be under these extreme conditions.

ETA: The geek term is adiabatic compressed ignition.

Serious question to 10mm_, bluefalcon and other gel knowledgeable folks (or TescoVee).

Could the "adiabatic compressed ignition" be causing additional damage to the permanent wound channel that would otherwise not happen thus making some rounds look more impressive than they really are?

It seems like that kind of violent expansion and contraction would create tears in the material that would otherwise not be there from the round minus the "explosion".

Not in clear gel I don't think so, that ignition appears to wiggle the gel a lot but I don't think it would tear or enhance the wound channel.
