Manhunter.

It, like Heat and Collateral was also directed by Michael Mann.  It was made in 1986.  The style is unusual.  Kind of filmed like you are with the actors.

British type Heat.

Not really the same movie, but I think it will appeal.

Also, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.

Again with the British Heat.

British Heat does not have cops apparently.  Gangsters fight each other too quickly for the cops to find them.

The Last Castle. (Rob Redford, James Gandolfini).  Very little gun play, however the story is excellent.  Redford is a 4+Star General who is sentenced to Military Prison for basically ignoring the POTUS, trying to save a some men.  Gandolfini, is the Warden.  Long story short, two alpha's with different styles of leadership, only one can walk away.  Kind of a Military Shawshank Redemption.

Mentioned above but deserves a 2nd.

Act of Valor.

Act of Valor Boat Scene

Roarke Denver (one of the stars) is really a stand-up dude in real life.

Good movie, bad acting. Just being honest. The stars are real operators, not actors.

I know. I went elk hunting with the guy who played the SEAL officer.

He is a great guy and a bunch of fun to hunt with so I am understandably a bit more tolerant of the dialog.

as also mentioned.. These are my go-to for great action/dialog..

Jack Reacher
John Wick (just straight gratuitous blood letting)
Street Kings
Sicario
Act of Valor (you guys are WAY too rough on them, the acting is adequate given the authenticity of the scenes/story)
The Kingdom (fantastic flick)
Kingdom of Heaven (I probably watch this movie every couple months, it's THAT good)
Band of Brothers (I watch this entire series about once a year, around Veterans Day, usually)

I'm sure there are others.
13 Hours will be another one that I'll pick up when it comes to the stores.

I'm a huge fan of "eyewitness accounts" or "accurate portrayals" like the bolded movies above.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Snatch (although admittedly not like Heat or Contraband)

If you just want cool gunplay, those are all probably good suggestions.

On the other hand, if you're in love with Heat and Collateral because they represent the pinnacle of the cinematic art, combining perfect acting, directing, cinematography, writing, and music with some top-notch gunplay...then there's really very little else that can ever come close.  Ronin is good, but not in the same league.  The criminal versus law-abiding duality that runs through both films isn't really present in any of those others mentioned, and yet it makes up the deeply vital core to Mann's films.

I just keep hoping and praying that some day he goes back to LA to direct one last crime drama in the city..and still has the skill to pull it off right.  Heat and Collateral deserve a third film to create their own LA crime trilogy.

Despite the poor reviews I'm a big fan of Miami Vice - another of Michael Mann's movies.  I think it would have done a lot better if it was titled differently.
