Part of this weekends road trip.  Left Fargo Saturday morning at 5am for Ellsworth AFB with my son in tow.  This was just one of many stops this weekend.  All together we put on just under 1600 miles in two days.
It was cool,  Not quite as big as I had expected.  Not a lot inside,  however what is inside is geared toward the bases history.  I was pretty limited at what I could get real good photos of outside due to construction.

Thanks.

Any info on the F-101 Voodoo? My buddy built a model of one when I was a kid. But you never really hear much about them. What was it's main focus? Service life? Was it a poor performer? I guess I will just wiki but figured someone here had worked on them. Just interested.

Lol.  I know one prop feathering mech is screwed up.  One blade out of four is feathered.  Maybe that's it.

Point interceptor.  A SR-71 could out turn it. The F-4 blew it into the Guard units and then to DM.

The few people i've run into that flew them said nothing good nor nothing bad.  I'm guessing the F-106 was a better interceptor and that's why it had a longer service life, even in Guard use.

In the fifties and sixties we were evolving so quickly in jet technology that military aircraft just didn't have long lifespans.  The few that are still around are testaments to their design.

The F-101 was caught in a time warp when it was introduced, in the age where new planes and new needs were outstripping each other at a rapid pace.

It was designed as a bomber escort, but the B-52 came along and didn't really need an excort.  So it became a plane without a mission.

Then SAC said no thank, but TAC picked it up as a nuke bomb carrier, but it was already doomed.  I think only about 75 were made.

It got picked up as an RF bird for about a decade, but airplane technology moved past it pretty quickly.

It did set records in the beginning, but again, faster, better jets were in production already.

I've been to that museum, really cool in the middle of nowhere.

The silo tour was neat but you had to sit through a boring base tour to get there.

When I was there two B-1's took off from that runway.  Bro in law still talks about it.

I didn't take the base tour.  I just stopped at Oscar zero on the way home and played in the real deal.

They do a base tour that ends with a tour of the missile silo trainer they have on base.

Been out there a few times, great to watch the B1's do takeoff/landings and other maneuvers, watched for hours. Folks moved out to Rapid so its always on my list to check out when I go visit.

Goofy looking things, but they bring good ol fashion Murican Freedom so who cares.

I got to witness a pretty good, but short show flying out of Rapid City one day.

There were already a few B1s in the air all lined up, headed away from us.  We could see the last one taking off out of Ellsworth.  He took his place at the end of the line and they all opened up the throttle.    Fucking gone.  I wish I had a camera that day.

F-101B, the two seat interceptor, was the most successful version with 479 built. They were transferred from active service to ANG units in the early 70's, and served with various state's ANG until 1982. The Canadians also used them until they were replaced by F-18's in 1984.
