In 1956 my grandfather and great grandfather bought a brand new John Deere 520 (still have it) ... They also had a 60, two A's, a D, and a 55 combine.

Lots of hard work, but a good living.

In before someone tries to deny this.

Sometimes these "good olde days" threads remind me of Iran saying it has no homosexuals.

Ya, the 50s were a dark and evil time of oppression for LGBTQWTFBBQ, homosexuals, asexuals, cissexuals, and had less-diversity. It was like Iran.

Here's something to think about.

In 1900, the U.S. was not a dominant world power. It was getting there, but it was not what it is today, comparatively. Most European countries were doing as well or better than the U.S.

By 1945, Europe had seen two world wars on its soil and its industrial base destroyed. Total European casualties from both wars far outstripped America's. At the end of WWII, the world was divided into the U.S. and Soviet camps.

These circumstances gave the U.S. an incredible advantage coming out of WWII. It was in a position to dominate the West and much of the world and did. We are where we are today because of the advantages we had on most every other country coming out of WWII.

There is no rational reason to expect the effects of those advantages to last forever.

Better standard of living because we have more cheap chinese shit and better technology. But would you say society itself is better?

Are we kinder? Are we more sociable? What's the divorce rate? How many kids are born out of marriage? How are our schools compared to back then? Can we still play dodge ball?

Despite segregation (which I vehemently disagree with) are black people better off now or back then? This was before liberalism destroyed the black culture.

In 1956 Black urban families had fathers and they worked for a living, kids went to church, learned in school, and parents took care of their kids. In the 60s they marched for freedom while open carrying arms

2016 the black urban family is just about gone. Drugs are rampant, children are born to single mothers, the projects are full of violence, guns are prohibited in most major cities, and prisons are full of black felons.  When they march they destroy and riot.

All because of the war on poverty and the war on drugs. We have had a black president for 8 years and it has only gotten worse.

You tell me which one is better.

Case Shined First Light on Abuse of Children
HOWARD MARKEL and M.D.DEC. 14, 2009

Tellingly, the case was brought by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In 1874, there were no laws protecting children from physical abuse from their parents. It was an era of “spare the rod and spoil the child,” and parents routinely meted out painful and damaging punishment without comment or penalty.

Modern media can reveal and distort.

Civil rights was going to come with or without the lefts war on America. We didn't have to have a war on morality and the family to achieve it. Sort like those who have been taught the Civil war was over slavery; they are only parroting the left's perception and history revision as it too was ending one way or another. The industrial revolution was coming regardless.
Fact is the black family was decimated as a whole because of the left's war on America. Wait and see how blacks "benefit" from Globalist (the left) mass migration. Even Farrakhan says the Dems are the new plantation owners and mass migration of even Muslims is a very bad idea and will only hurt blacks in America (keep in mind this is coming from the nation of Islam leader). You know its getting bad out there when Louis Farrakhan is talking more sense than the controlled RNC and DNC leaders.

Yes, and the NFA of 1934 was a government response to fear of a possible armed uprising against the government over the conditions of the Depression, as some at the time believed the actions of Bonnie and Clyde represented.

Go back and read about the debates going on at the time, and it s quite interesting and eye opening.

You really have no idea what you are talking about, do you?

Try telling that to a cancer or heart disease patient who survives a diagnosis today that would have been a death sentence in 1956, and then get back to us with your learnings.

Funny, but I don't think they're going to tell you that they would have preferred dying in exchange for seeing Elvis Presley in concert.

Try telling that to a cancer or heart disease patient who survives a diagnosis today that would have been a death sentence in 1956, and then get back to us with your learnings.

Funny, but I don't think they're going to tell you that they would have preferred dying in exchange for seeing Elvis Presley in concert.

What's the matter, are you mad, bro?

And what about the legions of old people in nursing homes across the country, enjoying all that longevity by shitting in their pants and babbling?

I think we quite often keep people going long after any quality of life is gone.

Yeah, because "diversity" is our strength!
There's greater racial tension now.

A lot of today's woman would LOVE to turn back the roles to the "misogynistic" 50's.

In the 50's, Blacks still were able to work and had to. The Black family was held together.

Now the .gov gives Black women a check for having kids and a penalty if she marries the father.

Its institutional slavery.

In that respect, I think Blacks may have been better off. They had the ability to make their own decisions. After 3 or 4 generations of welfare, the housing projects are the new plantation.

in 1956, we didn't have 24 hour news and the internet.  So you didn't hear about the murder, violence, or rape going on.

Now you get to hear about it...all the time....even though it doesn't happen...all the time...

Yep the statistics show you are FOS

http://www.sentencingproject.org/images/photo/1_US_prison_pop_1925-2013.png

So there are more people in prison today then back in 1925 or in the 50's.
I guess you failed to realize that the population of this nation has grown substantially since those times.
From 1925 to the 50's the population of the US doubled. From the 50's until today the population has doubled yet again.
Based on the stat above one might expect the prison population to be 800k today, but we also have more laws then ever
before, and a more sophisticated justice system.

In 1956, John Wayne, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe were some of the biggest stars in the entertainment world.

In 2016, our young people look up to "stars” like Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

In 1956, Americans were watching I Love Lucy and The Ed Sullivan Show on television.

In 2016, the major television networks are offering us trashy shows such as Mistresses and Lucifer.

In 1956, you could buy a first-class stamp for just 3 cents.

In 2016, a first-class stamp will cost you 49 cents.

In 1956, gum chewing and talking in class were some of the major disciplinary problems in our schools.

In 2016, many of our public schools have been equipped with metal detectors because violence has gotten so far out of control.

In 1956, children went outside and played when they got home from school.

In 2016, our parks and our playgrounds are virtually empty and we have the highest childhood obesity rate on the entire planet.

In 1956, if a kid skinned his knee he was patched up and sent back outside to play.

In 2016, if a kid skins his knee he is likely to be shipped off to the emergency room.

Zero Hedge

In 1956, ~80% of black children are born with married parents.

In 2016, ~20% of black children are born with married parents.

Family destruction causes more crime.  More crime causes more incarceration.

Of course I do.

I was pointing out an example of things aren't necessarily better now.

The US has been going downhill since the politicians gave the right to vote to non-taxpayers.

FDR helped accelerate the decline , LBJ pushed the country over the edge.

Obama pretty well finished it off.

Re: 1956.  I was 10 years old then.

Yes we have more houses with running water and electricity and more paved roads.  We have more food available.

But as a nation, we have lost our patriotism, our morality, and our independence.

As always, you have to give up something to get what you want.  And a majority of the voters want a free ride at the cost of liberty.

Enjoy the ride, folks.  You can't get off.

The problem is, too many made the wrong choices - irresponsible choices that were overall bad for society. If there is anything freedom haters hate most, it's that basic reality that humans, free to choose, will make the wrong choices. Therefore, they need constant controls put on them.
Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

Im 1956 there was Jim Crow laws, asbestos, and most importantly,  no AR15.com GD.

I'd still venture a guess that the everyday lives of the vast majority were better.

No, you're wrong (IMHO).  Strong middle class, strong economy, strong (for the most part) families with a solid moral foundation, blacks had (while vast problems with the 'system') a strong family and religious tradition, strong military, etc., etc.
The times have changed and not in a good way - I was alive in 1956 and I do not recall issues of potential rebellion, a fractured society and political parties openly screwing the population (I know, they probably were doing it but not blatantly as today).  It's been a slow spiral downward and most probably haven't either noticed or cared.
