So I'm looking for one of these:

or one of these:

Thing is, I'm probably going to have to have one custom made. I don't know the first thing about that type of thing, so that's where GD comes in. I know the two styles are a bit different so lets have a general discussion about which you'd prefer and why.

What will I do with it? Probably dumb shit or leaving it sit somewhere.

I cobbled together one out of a alum repro handle and a Ka Bar-type blade I found.

I cut the reverse side of the guard off so it lays flat against the sheath.

The bad thing about the real ones is you can find the knives 3 to 1 over the sheaths. A sheath with both the hanger tabs still present will cost you as much as the damn knife.

A cut down guard is a common enough user modification found on the original 1918's, for just that reason.

Yeah, I got the idea from this theater modified knife. It was made from a Robeson USN MK I knife/sheath....Check out the spike.

It belonged to a pilot that flew off the USS LEXINGTON (CV-16) as part of a grouping I purchased from a relative of his.

The top one is really starting to speak to me, but the gentleman that made it is no longer in the custom knife business. Would I be out of line contacting one of our resident smiths and asking for that exact design?

I've got a repro 1918. It's pretty chintzy, although it was cheap. It not only doens't have a full tang, it has NO tang. I will have to take a picture of it, it's kind of humorous.

This is the "grail" W-P.

A LC-14-B with the spring steel sheath. Most were issued to the US Signal Corps.

Yes, but that's kinda pricey at $115. The M1918 replicas are all over the place, and much cheaper.

When I was doing WW1 reenacting, I carried a 1918 trench knife. The scabbard clips under the cartridge belt (next to your body), which makes for a convenient carry. It doesn't flop around. Also, the 1918 knife is a blade, and not a spike, which makes it a bit more versatile.

I just bookmarked this seller today from someone who posted it in another blades thread, not sure what the steel is, I was going to ask if he listed more. Also, you can get the busse Argonne assault on eBay and other blade forums classifieds.

The M1918s were still in use in WW2, because of the fragile prongs on the original stamped scabbards and their scarcity, Airborne use to grind down the hilt a bit to let it lie flatter on the preferred side, and carry it in an M6 leather/staples sheath or in an M8 scabbard later in the war.

Don't forget about the nutnfancy video where he beats the blade against a rock until it snaps off the handle. Then he proceeds to call it junk and complains he has to pack out a broken knife from his location.
