I cobbled together one out of a alum repro handle and a Ka Bar-type blade I found. I cut the reverse side of the guard off so it lays flat against the sheath. http://oi67.tinypic.com/nn1uzb.jpg The bad thing about the real ones is you can find the knives 3 to 1 over the sheaths. A sheath with both the hanger tabs still present will cost you as much as the damn knife. View Quote That's awesome! |

So I'm looking for one of these: http://i49.tinypic.com/29fugyv.jpg or one of these: https://ewstoneknife.com/images/331918HD&S23.JPG Thing is, I'm probably going to have to have one custom made. I don't know the first thing about that type of thing, so that's where GD comes in. I know the two styles are a bit different so lets have a general discussion about which you'd prefer and why. What will I do with it? Probably dumb shit or leaving it sit somewhere. View Quote Don't know anything about the first, possibly because of the "Prototype" cast into the handguard. Looks like either a K-Bar or maybe an AF survival knife blade was used. I have one of the second shown. Like most of them, it is cheaply made and requires some work to make it a little bit stronger (filling the hollow handle with epoxy) and comfortable (filing/grinding mold marks from the handle and inside the finger holes). The scabbard of the original was meant to wear inside the pistol belt, and the metal ears that are spot-welded to the scabbard that hold it there often break off. I can't recommend this knife because of the low lever of workmanship and materials. There were some decent Japanese repros made long ago, but they are expensive and hard to find. Since the cost of a genuine antique is so high, you'd be foolish to actually take one onto the field. Frankly, I'd get one of the similar Cold Steel knives, and call it a day. On Amazon for about $50. |

Yeah, I got the idea from this theater modified knife. It was made from a Robeson USN MK I knife/sheath....Check out the spike. It belonged to a pilot that flew off the USS LEXINGTON (CV-16) as part of a grouping I purchased from a relative of his. |

The top one is really starting to speak to me, but the gentleman that made it is no longer in the custom knife business. Would I be out of line contacting one of our resident smiths and asking for that exact design?

Everittt's are nice, I have one, not as heavy as the 1918 or 1917 I have...

I've got a repro 1918. It's pretty chintzy, although it was cheap. It not only doens't have a full tang, it has NO tang. I will have to take a picture of it, it's kind of humorous.

Google up repro M1917 trench knife......NOT 1918, but 1917. Atlantic Cutlery makes a quality repro of this 1st trench knife design. View Quote Yes, but that's kinda pricey at $115. The M1918 replicas are all over the place, and much cheaper. When I was doing WW1 reenacting, I carried a 1918 trench knife. The scabbard clips under the cartridge belt (next to your body), which makes for a convenient carry. It doesn't flop around. Also, the 1918 knife is a blade, and not a spike, which makes it a bit more versatile. |

I think I'm going to go the custom route, does anyone recommend any particular knife makers for the 1st pic in the OP?

I just bookmarked this seller today from someone who posted it in another blades thread, not sure what the steel is, I was going to ask if he listed more. Also, you can get the busse Argonne assault on eBay and other blade forums classifieds.

The M1918s were still in use in WW2, because of the fragile prongs on the original stamped scabbards and their scarcity, Airborne use to grind down the hilt a bit to let it lie flatter on the preferred side, and carry it in an M6 leather/staples sheath or in an M8 scabbard later in the war.

I picked up a frost cutlery version when I was a kid because I thought they were cool. Not a correct version, but it's got the skull cracker and a THICK blade. Similar to the Busse design.
