MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. —Less than 24 hours after Martin County declared a state of local emergency Wednesday, Governor Rick Scott followed suit.
Scott declared a state of emergency Wednesday for St. Lucie and Martin counties after toxic blue-green algae continued to spread throughout the county’s waterways. Scott's emergency declaration comes a few hours after the Martin County Board of County Commission urged the governor to declare a state of emergency. The Martin County board also encouraged Scott to request that a federal state of emergency be declared by President Barack Obama. According to the governor's press office, the Executive Order will allow state and local governmental agencies to take action to lessen the spread of algae blooms in the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries. It's throwing everything off balance. Certainly the lawn care is contributing, but is not enough on its known to cause algae blooms this massive. |

That's some dangerous shit after googling it. Very harmful to wildlife and pets and even humans.
http://water.unl.edu/lakes/toxicalgae-faqs Pets and livestock have died from drinking water containing toxic blue-green algae. The risks to humans comes from external exposure (prolonged contact with skin) and from swallowing the water. Symptoms from external exposure are skin rashes, lesions and blisters. More severe cases can include mouth ulcers, ulcers inside the nose, eye and/or ear irritation and blistering of the lips. Symptoms from ingestion can include headaches, nausea, muscular pains, central abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Severe cases could include seizures, liver failure, respiratory arrest-even death, although this is rare. The severity of the illness is related to the amount of water ingested, and the concentrations of the toxins. |

The problem is big sugar has very little governance and no one Ives a shit that they are destroying the coasts when this happens. As a farm boy you should understand this. Do some research and come back and tell us all about how the guy with a few acres is the issue more than the companies with thousands of acres Eta: this is a major ecological disaster. The Martin county area is one of the countries top fishing spots and this is completely killing off the entire ecosystem |

I know a lot of nitrates and urea are used around here. I don't know what is being used there, but these fertilizers once in the water create the perfect conditions for algae blooms in certain temperatures/climates. It's fucked that the state gov would allow shit like that to happen, Money is an effective palm grease for some people I guess. Its sad that people have to suffer for it.
