I guess that depends on OP's age, but Dirty Harry isn't much newer than Doctor Strangelove.  Heck, some of the youngsters probably think Terminator 2 is an old movie!

Metropolis is a must see.
So many things done in Hollywood today are a direct result of the themes and ideas in that movie.

1970's brought us lots of good movies my favorite of all time is
The Outlaw Josey Wales.  Midway was another favorite of mine.  I didn't see many of John Wayne movies.  Big Jake is my favorite from the 70's close 2nd is the Cowboys and True Grit.

"On The Beach", the original 1959 version, not the remake.
"The Day The Earth Stood Still", again, the 1951 original.
"To Have And Have Not"
"Sahara"

"Key Largo"
"For Whom The Bell Tolls"

I finally get in on one of these threads with an as yet unnamed movie:
1936, "Things to Come" with Raymond Massey. For a great doubleheader, watch the original Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" followed by "Things to Come" Great entertainment from two classic films.

That's a good one.

Previously mentioned Fritz Lang's M...Have a strong stomach because I have actually watched the non circumcised version and one must think as a homicide detective or be heartless not to feel sick about a degenerate child murderer.
A very different movie made at very different time that you do not come from.

Oh, and 99.99% of modern movies suck ass. Old movies are the best. (And I'm not that old at 37.)

One that is overlooked was Natalie Wood's last movie called Brainstorm. Not only was she one of the most beautiful women in the world, the movie was pretty decent too.

Is that the one with the VR and the guy who got a little too into it?

I was gonna say that was such an obscure reference it probably hasn't been printed to video but I'd have been wrong:

Then the Fifth Element and finish up with "Duel" with Dennis Weaver.

Soylent Green
When it was filmed, Edward G. Robinson knew he was dying of cancer. That's all I'm going to say because I hate spoilers.

If you've never seen them, SyFy Channel runs the 1960s episodes of The Twilight Zone late at night. They're mostly 30 minutes long and self contained. A few of the especially good ones are:
A Game Of Pool
To Serve Man
Living Doll
The Obsolete Man
Eye Of The Beholder
Time Enough At Last
The Last Flight
The Odyssey Of Flight 33
The Passers By
Nightmare At 20,000 Feet
The Hunt
Two

The program was restarted in the '80s, but without Rod Serling's special touch, it just wasn't the same.
