I guess that depends on OP's age, but Dirty Harry isn't much newer than Doctor Strangelove. Heck, some of the youngsters probably think Terminator 2 is an old movie! View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I just scanned through but I didn't see Kelly's Heroes. Am I blind or are you guys slipping this bad? It's the first page, we woulda got there! And did! Is Dirty Harry considered old? Metropolis is a must see.
So many things done in Hollywood today are a direct result of the themes and ideas in that movie. |
|
1970's brought us lots of good movies my favorite of all time is
The Outlaw Josey Wales. Midway was another favorite of mine. I didn't see many of John Wayne movies. Big Jake is my favorite from the 70's close 2nd is the Cowboys and True Grit. |

"On The Beach", the original 1959 version, not the remake.
"The Day The Earth Stood Still", again, the 1951 original. "To Have And Have Not" "Sahara" "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre" "Key Largo" "For Whom The Bell Tolls" |

I finally get in on one of these threads with an as yet unnamed movie:
1936, "Things to Come" with Raymond Massey. For a great doubleheader, watch the original Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" followed by "Things to Come" Great entertainment from two classic films. |
|
All Kubrick's work is GENIUS except for his last one - Eyes Wide Shut which sucked donkey cock.
|
|
"The Blue Max"
"633 Squadron" "In Harm's Way" "Lawrence Of Arabia" "Murphy's War" "The African Queen" John Wayne comedy "North To Alaska" |

The Wind and the Lion....
Milius, Marines, Krags, what more do you need? |

A Boy and his Dog. View Quote That's a good one. Previously mentioned Fritz Lang's M...Have a strong stomach because I have actually watched the non circumcised version and one must think as a homicide detective or be heartless not to feel sick about a degenerate child murderer. A very different movie made at very different time that you do not come from. |

Didn't see anyone mention.....
" The Great Escape" OR "Jeremiah Johnson" |
|
All Quiet on the Western Front. It's one of the first talkies, and it's fucking awesome.
|
|
The only one that I've not seen mentioned here (yet) is "Twelve Angry Men"
|
|
"The Hill" with Sean Connery and Ossie Davis! Anyone ever see that one???
(OP, an amazing psychological drama) Actually, you should check out all of Hitchcock's movies, too! Alfred Hitchcock. |

Battleground (1949, I think).
It's a MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD World. |

One that is overlooked was Natalie Wood's last movie called Brainstorm. Not only was she one of the most beautiful women in the world, the movie was pretty decent too.

I was gonna say that was such an obscure reference it probably hasn't been printed to video but I'd have been wrong: Amazon |

Seriously,
Lawrence of Arabia is the very next movie you should seek out. Then the Fifth Element and finish up with "Duel" with Dennis Weaver. |

Castle Keep (1969) "Someday the world is going to be populated with nothing but Volkswagens"

Soylent Green
When it was filmed, Edward G. Robinson knew he was dying of cancer. That's all I'm going to say because I hate spoilers. If you've never seen them, SyFy Channel runs the 1960s episodes of The Twilight Zone late at night. They're mostly 30 minutes long and self contained. A few of the especially good ones are: A Game Of Pool To Serve Man Living Doll The Obsolete Man Eye Of The Beholder Time Enough At Last The Last Flight The Odyssey Of Flight 33 The Passers By Nightmare At 20,000 Feet The Hunt Two The program was restarted in the '80s, but without Rod Serling's special touch, it just wasn't the same. |

Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favorite old comedies
The Quiet Man with John Wayne, and Maureen Ohara looking fine as hell. They Were Expendable The Searchers, one of the best westerns ever made |

there's no point in answer the OP's question
they've made at least 5 excellent movies per year since about 1925 that's 455 great movies to list for him |

I haven't watched many "old" movies. It was good, and now I understand a lot more avatars and memes. What are some other older must-see movies? View Quote Great Escape, while not *that* old is still a must watch. All 4 hours of it. |
