A new battery tech from a very credible source that sounds to good to be true!?

Sounds good. 10x life and recharges in minutes.  Also doesn't explode.  Awesome.

This New 'Perfect' Battery Has Experts Stumped

I've heard this before. So I'll be skeptical until I see it in consumer products.

ETA: Graphene and Dual Carbon battery tech also had some big promises but has yet to be seen in anything common.

Battery technology is the next big barrier to cross.  Imagine if you could start a car with a cell phone size battery.

Where are the flying cars in everyone's driveway?  Scientists promise, but often don't deliver.

But, since he's the Li-Ion king, we could get lucky.

I've seen dozens of "amazing battery breakthroughs" in industry rags over the last decade.  The problem is always that they work fine on minuscule lab scales but rarely on any useful scale.

Jesus.  Yes.  The lack of flying cars means scientists should be relegated to the dustbin of history.  He said, replying to someone else on the network containing pretty much the sum total of human achievement...

There was an article about this in the Austin paper a few weeks ago.  I'd say, because of the source, and the institution, that there has to be something here.  I really don't think Goodenough and UT would be talking about it if they weren't sure.  I really hope so.

Was gonna say... We are pretty damn close.
My jump pack is only slightly larger then some old school cell phones I had back in the day.

But yeah, a breakthrough in battery technology, especially if it can be done cheaply, will be a game changer.

If.

I agree that it will revolutionize how we do many things but I remain dubious until they hit the real world or at least have independent lab testing done.

If one good thing came out of the popularity of douche flutes it's that it taught a lot of otherwise ignorant people some of the basics of electricity. Even if the lessons were sometimes learned the hard way.

Another link.  Looks like it might have a chance at being real.  That said, electric cars need more than a good battery to replace gas.  Our current electric grid is not built to handle fast charging cars.  Super caps or large underground batteries could charge the cars fast enough, but we would still need the extra electrical generation capacity to handle the increased load-even if that load could be spread out across a 24hr day.

i am still waiting for a way that catch and store electrical storms...

Thanks for the link!  Sounds awesome, but "glass electrolyte" makes me cringe a bit when considering durability and physical packaging.  Probably good for cars, but not so good for lots of other devices that suffer more frequent and severe shocks (like cell phones).

It already can!
1 charge your phone
2 turn it off
3 put it in a drawer for a week
4 after said week turn it on!
