http://wgno.com/2017/06/28/ancient-native-american-canoe-discovered-in-north-louisiana/

"SHREVEPORT, La.  An ancient Native American canoe thats anywhere between 800 and 1,500 years old has been found on the bank of the Red River in Caddo Parish just northwest of Shreveport.

According to a news release from Lt. Gov. Billy Nungessers office, the canoe was found on property owned by McKneely Family Partnership owned by Robin and Sharon Kavanaugh and Kay McNeely.

The canoe was found half-buried on a steep riverbank. It is 33-and-a-half feet long and up to two feet wide and two feet high. It is likely made of cypress, although the wood hasnt been identified yet.

The bottom of the canoe still retains the rounded shape of the tree trunk, although the bark has been stripped off. The sides are vertical and one to two inches thick. It is estimated to weigh between 1,200 and 1,500 pounds, although much of this weight is due to it being waterlogged. "

I lol'ed at the Spain comment.

This is pretty cool.  Actually, kinda amazing that it was just ... there.  And for so long.  I wish the story had included something about how it was found, and what the reactions were.

ETA:  Asked and answered!

My cousin found one of these (albeit smaller) during a dry spell on Caddo Lake. It is/was at the Mooringsport mini museum. We used to go collecting arrowheads all the time around the lake.

Wouldn't be surprised if it *did* turn out to be cypress; that stuff is badass.

It's a tree they cut down and hollowed out.
Now if it was a ship like the Constitution or a "Tall Ship", well then I'd say AWSOME! YMMV.

I wonder if they found any weapons with the canoe.  What a tragedy that would be.

Awesome find! This Indian canoe is about 900 years old, it was found about 15 miles from where I live. Thanks for sharing the story!
