I love the Lynch version of Dune but it went pretty far afield from the book in parts, especially the Weirding Module.

Plus it has an awesome soundtrack and young Sean Young in a tight rubber suit.

No Country For Old Men was good. McCarthy's books in general seem to translate very well to film.

Books and movies are completely different things, and they engage the mind in completely different ways.

Of the Tom Clancy screen adaptations, I thought that Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Red October were all good.

The Sum of All Fears was a disappointment.

I still think that Rainbow Six and Without Remorse should be filmed.

Most Stephen King novels made shitty movies but his short stories did well. But Green Mile was great, and Firestarter, Misery.

Master and Commander, though it took from multiple books and tweaked the bad guys from American to French.

Of all the books I've seen turned into films only one stands out as reliably transitioning to film. That would be Steven King's Pet Sematary. Kind of freaked me out how stuff matched what was in my mind's eye from the book. That freaked me out more than the story, actually.

Note: I stopped enhancing that weirdo-commie's fortune with my hard earned cash after reading "It".

No. Just no. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien was a masterpiece of the fantasy genre. The Hobbit by Peter Jackson was three movies of throwing the source material into the fires of Mordor and replacing it with communist propaganda.

I know there is more, but I'd like to suggest two. These are books I've read and enjoyed, and I think the movies were damned good. I don't know if watching the movie without being familiar with the book would make a personal impact, however. That's the magic of a good book.
1. Of Mice and Men-1992 version.
2. On the Road-2012. Yes, I know it's the Twilight chick. But watching her give a dual handi-J, cross country skiing style was some of her most convincing work.

The Karate Kid - it was a book adaptation of the movie, so the movie was made first and then the book was written. I read it when I was a kid so I thought it was awesome.

Robert Wises (Producer/Director) version of Shirley Jackson's book "The Haunting Of Hill House".
It was released as "The Haunting". Pretty much the best "Spooky Movie" ever made (AFAIC).

Hardly. The story had to be re-written for the movie so it can fit in a 2 hour time constraint and so the general public can follow the plot and not get lost. Compared to the book, the movie sucked.

The SciFi channel miniseries of dune was wonderful. Special effects were lower budget, but the screen adaption was great. Children of dune miniseries was also great.
