There are rumblings that in certain training centers, the instructors are overwhelmingly working with re-training personnel who used to be in the rear, as opposed to freshly mobilized soldiers. I think this might be a reason why Ukrainian political leadership wasn't aggressively pushing for a expansive mobilization bill: this is the solution. There was an article recently that quoted Zelenskyy, and he suggested that mobilization of large numbers wasn't necessary, as the UAF could find the troops themselves, or at least something along those lines. So, that was what the audit was for. We'll have to see how this plays out. If it's done right, they can find a number of replacements, though it is a dangerous technique to replenish losses without relying on increased mobilization. Even if it's done right, this is only something that can be done once, and it's very easy to abuse and send the wrong people to the front. Not everyone has the right physical and mental constitution to be an infantryman, especially in a war like this one. For instance, I could handle a support role, but I would not be a good infantryman for myriad reasons, and I'm in better shape than most and a halfway decent marksman. Additionally, if abused, it runs the risk of robbing necessary support units of needed manpower. Overall, though, there does appear to be a good bit of fat to cut of of the UAF. The system as a whole doesn't strike me as being very efficient. Lots of us were dooming about Syrski when he replaced Zaluzhny, but I've got to say, I see why Zaluzhny had to go, and I think Syrski has been making some good decisions (another one being reshuffling around 67th mechanized due to poor performance and abuse of new conscripts, in spite of it being a Right Sector heavy unit with political connections). Zaluzhny was calling for the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of men, without even having bothered to audit his own service to know if they had additional manpower that could be freed up... Russia jails hypersonics scientist for seven years in treason case
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-jails-hypersonics-scientist-seven-years-treason-case-2024-04-18/ LONDON, April 18 (Reuters) - A Russian scientist who worked on hypersonic technologies was handed a seven-year jail sentence on Thursday for treason after he was accused of passing state secrets to foreign nationals. A representative for St Petersburg's court system said Alexander Kuranov, 76, would be sent to a high-security prison and fined 100,000 roubles ($1,000). At the time of his arrest in 2021, Kuranov was the general director of St Petersburg-based Hypersonics Systems Research Facility, where he oversaw work on a new version of a Soviet-era hypersonic aircraft dubbed Ayaks. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that Russia is a world leader in hypersonic missiles - cutting-edge weapons capable of carrying payloads at up to 10 times the speed of sound to punch through air-defence systems. Ukraine said in April that Russia had used five hypersonic Zircon missiles to attack Kyiv since the start of the year. Putin confirmed in February that Russia had used the missiles in battle. Kuranov was accused of passing secret information to a foreign citizen about hypersonic technology research that he had worked on for a long time, the Interfax news agency reported in 2021. The court spokesperson said his conviction came after two trials. Treason and espionage cases are traditionally held behind closed doors in Russia. A number of Russian scientists in recent years have been charged with treason on suspicion of passing sensitive material to foreigners. Critics of the Kremlin say the arrests sometimes stem from unfounded paranoia, something the authorities deny. Russian Supreme Court data analysed by independent outlet Vyorstka showed 39 people were convicted of treason last year, up from 16 in 2022. Russia on Wednesday annulled a treason verdict against a physicist sentenced to 12 years for passing secrets to an unidentified NATO member state and ordered a retrial. |

If they said units, I would think they meant individual components of a battery. I guess we will find out in time. |

Only tangentially related, but when this war kicked off, I started doing the Ukrainian course on Duolingo.
Over two years later, I ran into a guy working at the hardware store whose coworker called him "Oleg", who answered "I not speak English" with a thick Slavic accent when I asked him a question (we were getting some fence panels down off a pallet so I could buy some). Lightbulb goes off. me: "Tey hovorish Ukrainskoyu?" Him : Da! Me: Cool! Khyvilinku. Me: (gets out google translate because that's about as much as I could remember on the spot. ) But I got to shake the guy's hand, tell him "dyakoyu!", and "do pobachenya" as we left, and I'll be damned if he didn't have a big old grin. War sucks, but good little things still come out of the mess. |
