The freaky thing is just seeing the bridge just stop in mid air.

A view from this past Sunday, I think we were on 95 at the time, about 5 miles from the bridge, as Carnival bused us back to our vehicles.

It would make the port less competitive against other ports pushing shippers to call elsewhere.

Unfortunately, I cant comment on why my guys were there for several reasons.   We have customers on all sides of this.   Our guys have literally been on every boat in that harbor right now EXCEPT the Dali.

It doesnt matter much anyway -- as of right now, there isnt anything worthwhile to report that everyone in the marine industry doesnt already know.    I can say this -- the middle of last week it was made very clear to all the marine construction and salvage outfits from Norfolk to Jersey that if cranes and salvage equipment could be provided quickly, they would be paid to be onsite, even if they werent ready for them yet.

Seaward out of Norfolk and DonJon up in Jersey beat feet up there last week and are standing by.   Crofton sent a crane and the floaters like Dann Marine might be hanging out to get something as well.

The companies that do alot of ship docking (Moran, McAllister, etc..) are probably licking their eyebrows right now.   Ive already heard rumblings from other municipalities about additional tug assist requirements in the future.

Edit to add:  Additional tug assists for places that have bridges, I mean.  Not really as big a deal for Norfolk due to the CBBT, MMBT and HRBT but there are a few smaller ports that will end up with a huge tug presence before the decade is out.

I think you may also see MSC and MARAD potentially changing the ports where they layberth the Pre-Pos if multiple assets can be tied up in a single port behind a downed bridge.  Currently, there is a significant amount of TransCom cargo volume capability tied up in that port right now.

Yep.  Not that the Antares and Denebola will go anywhere soon (or any SL-7 for that matter) but the situation is shitty.  It could have been much worse, but its hard to fathom the amount of money this will cost.  The lost lives are bad enough.

I figure the harbor pilot has to get off the ship somewhere and a tugboat ride would be right there if a single tug accompanied the ship.

Though I guess if you're going there, you'd need another for the other side, and one for the stern, and another for the other side of the stern...

For a boat that size, a 4000 horse tug pulling on the bow and another 4000 horse tug pulling in reverse on the stern could possibly have straightened her out enough for only a glancing blow, but thats a huge maybe with a million variables.  Youre also hoping you dont kill  any tugboaters doing that, so its hard to tell what a tug captain might do in that kind of scenario.   Feeding out the line might be the only option in many instances.

That was no mistake. Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner and the bridge was named after him. Total disrespect from this administration.

I have a lot of respect for the dudes cutting the bridge into pieces.

This is the maritime equivalent of cutting hundreds of trees for firewood than starting to cut them into 18" lengths - every piece you cut is under different stresses in ways you can't always tell, only this time, it's in near-zero-visibility water and you're a diver with a torch, not standing on dry ground with a chainsaw.

Every piece you cut has the potential to twist and bend or spring back on you, or cause another piece 100' away to twist and hit another diver. Or cause a large piece to pin you underwater.

Spooky stuff. Whatever they're getting paid, they're earning it.

For that speed profile, indirect tow by a stern tethered escort is the better option than a direct pull. There are places that have tethered outbound escort as standard procedure for this specific scenario, usually due to past circumstances.

If the backing bell rumor is true, a 6-7k hp tethered ASD/tractor tug going starboard indirect at the same time likely had a good shot at keeping it straight enough to miss the bridge. Again, that's not even touching the larger issue of what it would take for all domestic ports to have enough proper tugs with trained wheelhouse crew to run a tethered escort past all vulnerable infrastructure.

His granddaddy was an engineer on the Underground Railroad, and carried thousands of escaped slaves across the Francis Scott key Bridge to freedom in Scranton PA each night.  He would return each morning and blow the train horn to wake up young Joe for a morning of crabbing and fishing out on the Chesapeake. Joe was inspired by his childhood when he wrote Maryland’s famous slogan “Crabcakes and Football, that’s what Maryland Does”

Have you ever considered that the local power structure wanted the bridge to be taken out so they could get some sweet federal $$$$ to replace the bridge without having to vote a bond election and impose additional taxes locally to pay for it?

A cynical person would also consider the palm greasing that would take place in addition to a massive cash influx to the local economy.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/3d-sonar-images-of-baltimores-key-bridge-reveal-the-underwater-wreckage-in-detail-180984090/

Hamstrung by poor visibility in Baltimore's Patapsco River, divers are using sonar to help navigate the underwater wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Clean-up and salvage efforts are underway at the site of the bridge, which collapsed into the river in the early morning hours of March 26, after being struck by the cargo ship Dali, which had lost power. Six construction workers who were filling potholes on the bridge died as a result of the accident.

Three-dimensional sonar images shared publicly for the first time on Tuesday show the "sheer magnitude of the very difficult and challenging salvage operation ahead," according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which posted the images on Facebook.

If the Feds are paying for this work, they should sue Maryland for installing a bridge that was difficult to remove from navigable waterways.

Moran adds an extra 3100 an hour per tug for escort with a 2hr minimum.

So tug services for an off hours transit go from (spitballing) 13-15k to probably 30k or more.

ETA: If you get into a tractor tug, I'm pretty sure the rate is 1.5x normal rate

All joking aside, I wonder how things would differ if this were a war emergency.  For example, we were going at it with China and we got caught with our pants down with two carriers on the wrong side of it (yes, an unrealistic example for this particular bridge).

I wonder if they would bring in massive tugs, make a few cuts, and drag the shit out of there with brute force.

That bridge is deeply imbedded in the mud. There is nothing that could move it by dragging it. I would bet you couldn't even get enough air bags under it to lift it out of the mud.

Civil rights groups call for collapsed Baltimore bridge to be renamed when it's rebuilt because legacy of national anthem author Francis Scott Key is 'clouded with racism accusations'

Civil rights groups are calling for the collapsed Baltimore bridge to be renamed when it's rebuilt, citing accusations of racism against national anthem author Francis Scott Key.

The Caucus of African American Leaders of Anne Arundel County in Maryland voted unanimously to call for the renaming and will lobby governor Wes Moore on the proposal, as reported by the Baltimore Banner.

The caucus includes civil rights groups such as the NAACP and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

Leaders argued that the The Star-Spangled Banner author  -who the collapsed bridge was named after - was a slave owner who wrote lyrics that scholars have said 'demeaned black people.'

They have asked for the bridge to be renamed after late congressman Parren J Mitchel, the first black man from Maryland elected to the US House of Representatives.

They have asked for the bridge to be renamed after late congressman Parren J Mitchel, the first black man from Maryland elected to the US House of Representatives

Democratic gov Moore told Fox News he remains 'laser-focused on providing closure to these families, clearing the channel, and rebuilding the bridge.'

However, the Baltimore Banner reported that on Monday Moore told reporters there will 'be a time for that' conversation at a later date.

While as a lawyer Key helped many black Marylanders obtain their freedom before emancipation, he opposed the idea of free black citizens in the US, helping create the American Colonization Society, which promoted the emigration of black Americans to Africa.

Key is also often quoted as claiming that black Americans are 'a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community.'

However,  the Star Spangled Banner Foundation has claimed the racist quote is 'Incorrectly credited to Key as a first-person expression of his attitudes about race in the United States.'

The foundation added: 'The quote is taken from page 40 of Jefferson Morley's generally insightful 2012 book Snow-Storm in August: Washington City, Francis Scott Key, and the Forgotten Race Riot of 1835).
