I really liked this show, I hope they keep the pace and deliver as good a second season.
I never played the video games so I have no reference to go by. I'm curious about the soundtrack, the music is actually quite good but why the golden oldies? was that the only stuff that survived? |

I think that a lot of the criticism comes from people not playing the games. There is a lot of things about the show that seem really stupid if you haven't played the games; stimpacks magically totally healing you, radaway totally healing radiation, running like a bitch from a radioactive grizzly bear screaming "fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck...," nausiating optimism crushed quickly by the "real world," the implausibility of still eating 200 year old cereal, the list goes on. That dumb stuff is all in the games. It makes fun of itself, in the precise way the games do.
I agree some of the underlying story isn't perfectly developed, and the penis pimple joke is extremely cringe, but I think the plot is a pretty standard Fallout trope, and they absolutely nailed the tone and feel. I think the fan service, while everywhere, was well done as to not be overbearing. For example, when Lucy touches the NCR flag, you get the main menu theme from New Vegas. If you didn't play the game, that probably just sounded like a cool change in the sound track. I'm super excited for season 2. NCR Flag and Fallout 4 Theme Scene | Fallout 2024 |

As someone who knew nothing about the game it was even funnier on the rewatch since I had more context and needed less attention to the plot.
It did a good job of capturing early Cold War paranoia and extending it to its satirical end along with the retro 1950s Sci-Fi tech picture of what the 21st century would look like. |

Okay something has been bugging me. Just finished the first season, might need to rewatch.
Click To View Spoiler So in the show one of the big reveals is that Vaultec actually is responsible for the nuclear war that nearly ends humanity.
Vaultec gets everything in place and then causes the nuclear war to be kicked off, hoping to be "King of the Ashes" so to speak. AFAIK, this is not video game cannon, correct? Lucy's dad was not born in the vault, he was in cryostsasis in vault 33. They awaken a new person to overseer every so often. Vault 32 discovered the truth and rebelled against the overseer and were all wiped out. How? Lucy's dad was somehow responsible for the nuking of the New California Republic city.. why did he do that? And is that how his wife/Lucy's mother became a feral ghoul? |

Vaultec gets everything in place and then causes the nuclear war to be kicked off, hoping to be "King of the Ashes" so to speak. AFAIK, this is not video game cannon, correct? Debatable. The games have a tapestry of cloudy backstory about the war between China and the USA escalating amid the resource shortages, while the USA was struggling with mass unrest on the home front not shown in the show. The extent of VaultTec's meddling in affairs to cause the war is never expressly stated in the games as far as I remember, however VaultTec definitely did all they could to create fear in the population to get them to buy into their vault system. Lucy's dad was not born in the vault, he was in cryostsasis in vault 33. They awaken a new person to overseer every so often. Vault 32 discovered the truth and rebelled against the overseer and were all wiped out. How? A lot of the corpses we see in vault 32 appear to have died from suicide. I think the viewer is left to guess whether the inhabitants willingly killed themselves out of panic once they knew the truth, or perhaps vault 31 gassed them with something that drove them all into a homicidal / suicidal spree. It isn't well told, just like how Betty was able to clean up vault 32 before people were allowed in. Lucy's dad was somehow responsible for the nuking of the New California Republic city.. why did he do that? And is that how his wife/Lucy's mother became a feral ghoul? Hank nuked the NCR because they had tapped into the vault's water supply. He couldn't let the vault dwellers know that not only had society reformed on the surface, but that it was thriving without VaultTec. Plus he was pissed his wife ran off their their daughter, and who doesn't want to pop a little canned sunshine on the ex wife? In the games the way you became a Ghoul was by having a certain special unknown genetic makeup, then surviving a nuclear blast and taking an enormous dose of radiation. Not everyone became a Ghoul who was exposed to the bombs, only a certain few who had the genes to become a Ghoul. In the game Fallout 3 the player can actually nuke the town of Megaton. Everyone there dies except for one person, Moira, who becomes a Ghoul. View Quote |

Click To View Spoiler I’d like to add to this excellent explanation that it was likely luck of the draw as to whom was a ghoul in control of their faculties and those that ended up feral. IDK if there was ever info as to why some people went feral and some people simply became immortal. The show explains that Cooper has to dose with something routinely to avoid going feral, but that’s only in the show AFAIK.

Then again, it’s still possible that Moldaver was a disillusioned Vault-Tec insider. She somehow has a listening device for Cooper that works with a Pip-Boy. Moldaver is interesting. I watched it a second time. Vault-Tec bought every company she ever worked for, and it is implied heavily that she's working on technology related to prolonging life. I would bet that she's the one who invented the technology used by Bud Askins for Vault 31. This would explain why she is still around, but unknown to Hank, as she may have had a pod (or pods) somewhere else. It also may have been that Hank new her, but by saying anything he'd open the can of worms. She's the "Flame Mother" and worked at Hollywood Forever, which is a cemetery and crematorium. The flame and death connection there is obvious, as is the title "forever" and life extension. Through their ashes thing is another crematorium reference, and perhaps indicates that the "crematorium" is somehow more connected with rebirth. I don't understand why Norm didn't just threaten Bud with letting out all his Buds if he didn't open the door. Clearly Bud/Brain on a Roomba is planning a timed release, and Norm could upend that entire plan just by letting everyone out. The Ghoul/Cooper Howard, seems to have some kind of bunker at the end in the Hollywood Hills near what would have been his home. I'm guessing that is what he came out of on the quest to find his family in the last shot he is in from the series. Overall, this is the only series since Band of Brothers that I've felt was interesting enough to watch twice within a short period of the original release. Well done Amazon! |

Because if he knows what vault is wife is in and brings his daughter there, he theoretically should know where his family is as they would have no reason to be thawed out or leave the vault they are in before VaultTec has assumed control of the surface. And if that was the case it would really paint his wife as an absolute gigabitch to take his daughter and leave him to the bombs. |

She wasn't on the list for 31 as we saw, and how he could have gotten her to a vault in time but not gotten in...gigabitch would be in character for his wife. She loves Vault-Tec enough to kill everyone except the people she loves, and we can assume by the point the bombs fall that Cooper and her are divorced. He's working the birthday party for "alimony payments" when the bombs drop. I'd think that she somehow got his daughter through being a bitch, perhaps trapping Cooper in a way that he either had no choice or was duped. I think Cooper also endures a lot with his dog Roosevelt, who is referenced constantly. It would explain why he both hates Dogmeat and has a soft spot for him, too. |
