Now that you have an M1A you need an AR308.

Ruger SFAR is you’re willing to workout possible issues

Or

Sig 716i.

You probably should just get both.

They had .308 garands recently,  grab one of those.

Edit: since you're in colorado,  I'd get both.

Rifles in .308 have always been a tough one. Nothing really interests me in the .308 realm... Not even the caliber itself. I might have been willing to give the Beretta ARX-200 a try if it ever came out, but it never did.

My brother got a Springfield M1A just before the WA ban went into effect. He wanted one for quite a while, but I didn't really care for it when I got to try it out.

I'd get an AR10.

Have owned or shot M1-A, FAL, etc.  They are poor platforms for optics.

FAL has mediocre accuracy, and a crap trigger.  M1-A has decent accuracy, and a better trigger, than the FAL.

With a good barrel and trigger, the AR is a MOA gun or very close to it.

They fought a lot of wars with FALs, they are accurate enough. I also greatly prefer the recoil over an AR-10 platform.

Not gonna read the entire thread.

But I lived in CT and learned the hard way. You NEED to buy as many stripped lowers (AR15 and AR10/308) as you reasonably can. You'll be happy when you have them stashed away.

If $1800 is your budget and you’re worried about availability down the road, why in the world would you consider anything other than a couple large-frame ARs from PSA?   Heck, build your own with components you prefer.

I get that the FAL is a cool-looking gun.  I had several back in the day when mags were cheap, even during the ‘94 AWB.  I think I still have the receipt from Entreprise to prove it.  But as cool as it and the M1A and the roller-rocked 308s are, the large-frame AR is certainly cheaper and will undoubtedly be more accurate.

They are also interesting for a variety of reasons.   That quote (Whelen) is gun rag bullshit, I am not surprised it still gets parroted and mis-applied.  He liked Garands, and a lot of the rifles (like FALs) people utter that about were about the same accuracy wise.  He also liked his .30 WCF, not exactly an MOA competitor.

Not sure much actual truth was ever printed in or taken from a gun magazine, but it sure won't die like it should.

My 2 cents here.

I've owned all the major .308 semi autos.

If you are really going to shoot, get a quality AR10 derivative.
Spend the money to get a good one.
A family member has an LMT and it's very very nice.
Mags are relatively inexpensive depending on brand.
Lot's of after market support.
Modular.
I had an Armalite and it was good to go.
Should have kept it.

Don't mess with an M1A unless it's an older one with mostly GI parts.
Especially the bolt, barrel and Op Rod.

PTRs and DSA FALs are hit and miss. I'd pass.

If you want an FAL find a pre-ban SAR48, Argentine or even an FN if you have the funds.
Any FAL built by ARS will be good to go also. Mags are expensive now.

Wrong- Other states figured out CA’s “mistakes” in their ban.  Can’t get those in WA currently as a result….

I was surprised to see we can still get mini 14s and Ruger PC carbines.

Because you can remove the heat shields on Minis, and the PC doesn’t have one either.

Proposed laws are subject to amendment, and generally go thru several different versions before they get to a governors desk for signing.

Until it becomes law, you have absolutely zero knowledge of how the exact wording of the final bill will end up.  One sentence can be added in 5 minutes when they are reconciling between the house and senate versions.  Or deleted, if they figure they can’t get the votes to pass in both houses.

We see it all the time- a state house passes a bill.  State senate passes a similar bill, with somewhat different provisions.  They then have to work out which one needs to amend their version, maybe both.

This is 100% how WA’s ban went down.  Wording changed a few times along the way.  Stuff was taken out, other stuff was left in.  They learn from other states and see what challenges happen, and try to head them off.

Perhaps you have heard of a similar situation (federally) called the Hughes Amendment to the Firearms Owners Protection Act?  A bill that was generally favorable for gun owners?  (Yeah- it fucked us for new machine guns).

Being complacent is a bad way to approach it….

I owned a FN FAL, I was disappointed with its accuracy. 168 grain SMK's were still 3 moa at 100. HK 91's are worse and ruin brass.

I own two Springfield Armory Super Match rifles that are hammers, the problem is I can't see iron sights any longer as I approach 70 years of age.

My AR-10's are perfect as far as accuracy, reliability, scope/red dot mounting, trigger upgrades, adjustable length of pull, future parts replacement, ease of maintenance, the ability to swap calibers/uppers and the manual of arms is identical to an AR-15.

I have Armalite AR10's with the old school metal magazines. Most people would be better served with DPMS/Magpul/KAC style magazines, but I prefer the AR10B option.

You won't be "bored" if you buy a quality rifle that is accurate and reliable. I have one Lilja barreled upper and two Noveske barreled uppers, they all shoot better than 1 moa with Sierra bullets. Ammo quality is more important than barrel quality IME. You will be surprised at how well a factory rifle will shoot with premium ammo.

They can be more accurate than people think.

Mine barely stabilizes the 168 SMKs.  I've heard 1:12 barrels can be hit and miss with them.  If they so much as kissed a blade of grass they'd start tumbling.

It does, however, really like the 155 grain AMAX and ELD bullets from Hornady.  Stabilizes without a problem and produces better groups.

Their accuracy can also vary considerably between examples. I had a shitload of FALs back when I played FAL pokemon, many factory guns and 7–8 kit builds. When I eventually found ammunition that delivered near MOA (5 shot) out of my most accurate FAL (an Argentine kit gun), that would still barely manage 3 MOA in most of the others.

Then you start chasing the which load per rifle thing or start regrinding locking shoulders and realize you're never going to overcome the tilting block.

I'm partial to FALs but it boils down to what you what to do with it.  If you want to get a piece of history get a FAL or H&K G3, one downside to the FAL is you should only shoot mil spec ammo.  If you want something different and modern get an AR10 "other".

It is pretty hard to beat the AR platform, you can make it into whatever you want.

Given my states leaning position, I have decided on the ar10 platform.

.308 lower builds are on the radar. Platform is confusing. I'm learning.

PSA lowers are tempting, but I'm stuck with PSA uppers then right?
