When it comes to sheer range and sound you can beat Ann and Nancy Wilson

Karen Carpenters voice has been analyzed for many years and it has been concluded she had the perfect pitch and tone.

Lots of female singers have great control of their pitch, but their enunciation is so poor that I can only understand about a third or less of the words to whatever they are singing.  Like listening to someone sing with a mouth full of marbles and a gag over their mouth.

If I can't understand what they are singing, I automatically discard them as potential "best" vocalists.  It is unfortunate that this discards the vast majority of both female and male vocalists.

It takes far more control to be both on pitch AND enunciate well enough that people can actually understand the words to whatever they are singing.

I like her. I agree with your assessment.

I haven't seen her live, but I don't go to shows much.

Not a fan of all her stuff, but in this duet with Prine, she  is flawless. It's cover of an old Possum song.

You beat me to it. Loveless is probably my most favorite female country singer. "The moan" she has is not contrived like a lot of pop-country singers imitate. That's some "in her bones" stuff. If i recall, she is from Kentucky and it shows in her voice. She has got to have some legit hillbilly in her family woodpile.

One thing i always liked about her is that she just let's the Irish in her voice run. Most UK singers Americanize their voices for sales. Also the reason i liked Al Stewart.

Yup. I'm a fan of British/Irish/Aussie female singers that keep/work in their accents. Sophie Ellis-Bextor sounds the same singing as she does talking.

It was weird hearing my teenage daughter listening to "Murder on the Dancefloor" earlier this year.
