I remember this. Feds in plain clothes smash an innocent man to pieces. Nothing happens.

We need an enema, badly.

They stopped him because they thought he was the suspect. Asked for ID and he fought back.

A non-LEO would not necessarily know how far they would go so he should have known better than to resist!

They approached him in plain clothes without identifying themselves and he asked if it was a mugging and then ran.

The punishment SHOULD be such that it stops people from doing the unwanted behavior. Evidently, instead of being too big, the verdicts aren't big enough yet.

The problem is the layers of insulation between the actors and their consequences.  When taxpayers pick up the tab there's little incentive to do better.  Frankly, criminal charges should be more frequent because "unreasonable force" is also "assault".

But instead we have a situation where cops here even argue that settlements aren't taxpayer money because insurance will cover it.

That just means the judgements aren't big enough yet. Once the judgements are big enough to bankrupt or seriously impact the operations of the governmental entities the behavior WILL change.

The same folks will just go on to another city and continue the cycle.  The fix is to eliminate the insulation.

Kettling of a small group isn’t really kettling…

Have done it- problems started when the sidewalks and buildings were used as part of the kettle structure, and people tried to claim that they were (legally) on the sidewalk to begin with, therefore they were actually following law/orders, etc etc.  (been a while so my memory might not be 100% correct.)

Hard to prove or disprove stuff in protest/riot situations sometimes, and even with video, piecing it all together takes time, people, and money.  When they really just want everyone to just go away, so no follow up happens, so the cases get dismissed, then 2 years later you pay someone money in a lawsuit, because that is cheaper than paying to do the required follow up to prosecute the cases (also helps if the DA is actually on board).  Riot control isn’t easy work, but it is harder when there is no backing for enforcing the laws, and no follow up to make sure good cases move forward.

He looked nothing like the suspect.

Their word against his, and ill take his word for it since they made people delete video.
