The threat is very real. Two years ago I would see about 60 million security log entries a month on the systems I'm currently managing. Last month we saw 300 million security logs. They are the same systems. In the last 48 hours I've seen over 10 million attempts to break into my network via a recently announced vulnerability. The attempts to brute force into our VPN. Have gone from several dozen a day to about 30,000 a day.
there is a very real possibility for the month of April. I will see 1 billion security entries into our logging systems. |

Stories like this are predicated on a hidden assumption: that All, emphasis All, American utilities and other backbone industries are sitting around with their thumb up their ass waiting for a bell to go off so they can switch thumbs.
My experience is somewhat to the contrary, we are not at the mercy of clueless feckless critical providers ripe for the picking. I'm sure the chinese can kick us in the shins, probably not the balls, and I'm very skeptical that they're going to pwn us to any significant degree. |
