45 adding a plus one to all this.

I hate that my kids have to get started in these circumstances.

I bought my house at 28 in 2012 when the real estate market was in the dump. I bought it for half of what the original owner paid to have it built. It's now worth at least twice that (and four times what I paid) and interest rates are a joke now.

The average 28 year old today can't even afford a "starter" house.

I feel for them. Shit sucks.

I’m 45 with 2 daughters.  I’ve lived in my current house since 2013 or 2014.  I could not afford to buy my house at today’s assessment.  I will most likely not own a second home.  I don’t know how my kids will be able to afford a house when they are old enough.  I fully expect future taxes to make a hereditary pass down very difficult even though I’m below the estate tax limits of today.  I need to set up a trust so that the house flows outside of probate.   That only takes care of living arrangements for one kid, though.  My mortgage is affordable for me. I will have it payed off on time.  I have no additional debt. I have life insurance that can pay the house off entirely if I die.  I don’t go out to eat much or drink expensive things. I brown-bag my lunch every day at work..  I don’t drink or smoke. We own used vehicles. We don’t take expensive vacations, etc.

Shortly before I got married 14 years ago, my father once said to me, “With the way the world is today, I won’t hold it against you if you don’t have kids.  I’d like to be a grandfather, but I’ll understand.”

This. 41. I think I might make a little more than both my parents when they were working but that ain't saying much for a HS diploma only.
Only thing I can do, is make sure my kids get a degree in something like engineering and try to teach them good finances that I was never taught.

You obviously have never met people that think further than what they can put their hands on.

I'm early 30s with decent income, college degree, house, etc. Never having kids for various reasons.

I don't want tangible things. I have those. I want security. I don't want to have to worry about the old lady getting jumped by bums and illegals or me being arrested because I called someone an idiot on the internet. I don't want to have to worry about being able to enjoy my hobbies. I don't want to worry about being persecuted or attacked for my beliefs. I don't want to worry about being able to afford food or a place to live in the future.

I don't care about a big house (I just don't want neighbors), I don't care about a fancy car (my newest ride is 21 years old with 209,000 miles), I don't care about having a side by side, I don't care about a big camper or a fancy new BBQ.

I care about being able to support and protect my family.

The boomer memes literally write themselves. The best paying jobs have little to do with effort and almost everything to do with connections or fulfilling some diversity quota. Look up the salaries at your local university or non-profit hospitals and you'll find the salaries of administrators dwarfing even that of surgeons. No medical school or call schedule required either. The orthopedic and cardio-thoracic surgeons at my local university hospital make 600-700k while the CEO makes close to 1 mil attending catered zoom meetings all day. The last one left with a several million dollar severance bonus after being there for less than 5 years for his "hard work" during COVID.

It doesn't end there either. You have big big tech companies in the Bay Area paying HR drones and "social media managers" easily 150k, a salary comparable to that of high level engineers and programmers. Again, no mind numbingly difficult knowledge of math and physics required either.

Working hard is for suckers. The way to make it big in this country is to grift or leech off of someone else's work. You'll be less stressed and have more time to actually enjoy your money as well.

Housing prices even in lower cost areas absolutely are a hurdlle, but really good jobs and high wages.  What’s considered a starter home among my daughter and her friends is much nicer and bigger than what was common 30 years ago.  When I was that age, housing costs were lower, but wages and job opportunities were also.  Interest rates for houses was higher.  I remember paying to get points to lower my rate to 11%.  My parents had even lower costs for housing, but decent job opportunities with low wages.  Starting out has always been a struggle in one way or another and when you’re younger the idea of taking things one step at a time seems like every day is ten years.  I felt the same way when I went through it and generations before us did as well.

There's something biological with wanting to be independent, having a space for yourself, and raising a family of your own. It's engineered into our DNA.

When society messes with that flow of events, bad things will happen. A man without a family and nothing to live for is dangerous.

So yeah, I can definitely see why young people are very pissed. Society has pulled the rug out from underneath them socially, economically, and institutionally.

Everything wrong is right. Up is down. Black is white. Women are Men. There's no such thing as parents. There are no genders. And our elected officials and Enforcement agencies that are supposed to retain some sense of normalcy are rotten to the core.

The system that their parents and peers grew up with is broken and they haven't learned how to live in this new world. Just like any other generation...I help the ones that want to be helped. The ones that don't care to help themselves can pound sand.

I feel for you kids. Don't give up.

They need to realize it takes a long time for one's assets to hit the upward bend of the exponential curve. If they start young, it happens later in life and then they will experience real wealth appreciation. The first 20 years appears almost linear with a low slope upwards.

For it being all doom-and-gloom, we are one of the most materialistic societies in world history.  Everyone has cell phones, high-speed internet, luxury goods (or expensive fakes -- bags, watches, clothes, etc.), cars, social habits that require disposable income, etc.

People waste so much money, it's laughable.  And on top of that, there are lots and lots of people spending big money -- money that I don't understand where it's coming from.  I mean, just look at Rolex.  The waiting lists in the US are YEARS, and most of those people can't afford those things or shouldn't.  Spending $70k on a pickup truck, $50k on an SUV, etc.

People could save at least $5k a year just cutting out superfluous spending on stuff like nights at the bar.  Here's an idea.  Grab a few of your friends, kick in for a bottle of wine and a 12 pack of beers, and stay at home.  Play board games or something.  But they'll have no problem going out a few nights a week, dumping $50-75 each night on drinks at a bar.

It sucks out there.  Almost everyone is getting hammered, even those who have a house.  Taxes are through the roof, the government spends non-stop, inflation has been high.  The younger people exacerbate the issue, not relieve it though.

Certain things aren't going to happen if you're making $50k a year gross anymore though.  You're not getting a house, you're not getting a 401k, and you're not building a reserve fund.  That isn't going to change.  The only thing you can change is to try and make yourself more valuable to an employer and reduce your spending.  That requires discipline, which most Americans don't have.

This.  Could I buy my current home with what I was making 45 years ago?  Of course not.  Did I buy a house when I got my first job?  Of course not.  Loved in an apt for several years.  Wife and I saved money for a down payment.  Got the new house, then sold and get a better one, etc.  took 20 years to get the 2nd one.  Bunch of wimps out there.  I don’t fear shit for my kids.  You know why?  Because they’re not fucking afraid.  And you know what? They have good jobs and kids and houses and cars and shit.  This is all without a college degree.  One went to the school of hard knocks and the other got a degree from the USMC on how to be a mortar man.  And my kids make more than I did, at their age.  Afraid for them?  Not one bit. And they started this great life while in their 20-s.

Opportunities are still there, just not the same paths to success as the past.  Like always.

Be willing to work, stay out of trouble, realize it takes time to succeed. Be flexible and look for opportunities, esp when young.  The world is still waiting to receive you with open arms.

Don't want to work, don't value learning, demand the best immediately just cause your awesome - the world will be full of disappointment.

I'm 40.  When I was 4 years old, my parents had a combined income around $85k and they had a 2,200sq-ft house built on an acre in a nice neighborhood for right at $100k.  They both always had decent vehicles and put me through private school.

"Starter wages" haven't changed much since then but the cost of literally everything sure as fuck has.

Same. 39 years old, we have a decent nest-egg in savings and investments, own 2 properties, and had to earn every single thing we own, as it should be. That said, I fear for my 2 kids and their future. Things have been on a slow downward slide since the 1960s, progressively getting worse. Degeneracy and corruption all around keeps driving things downward.
