Reading reports, they were having a tough time with the fire in the pier itself and decided to basically let the building go to save the pier. Fire spread in the deck to 15' past what they call the hammerhead, where the pier widens at the end.
Mayor already said they would rebuild the damage. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/fire-on-oceanside-pier-creates-massive-smoke-plume/3498690/ |

They're saying they got it stopped about 15' past (toward shore) of the hammerhead (where the pier widens at the end), but having a tough time putting out the deck fire. Chef at the little fish shop kiosk said she saw smoke coming up from under the pier deck behind the vacant Ruby's restaurant building. They just had 5.5 million in work done on electrical and water/sewer pipes in the last year. Will be interesting to find out where and what started the fire. |

County SD, as did my parents and grandparents. My great grandparents moved there in the 30s. Everyone who was actually a local called it North County San Diego. It most definitely is considered San Diego; you sound like a transplant trying to fit in. Anyhow, while I'm getting nostalgic, OSide used to be a wild mix of drugged out homeless, surfers (not hippy peacenik surfers, but more on the Point Break side of things, my crew) and the absolute worst the Marines had to offer. It was about as sketchy as you could get in SD without going into the barrio (s). The jetty sure could get good though, smell and disgusting water aside. |

Last night the wife mentioned that Ruby's had caught fire. She still has family out there that give us the local updates. We moved up to Oceanside from La Mesa back in the early 90's. Hill street provided our entertainment almost every weekend. Surfing at Buccaneer beach was walking distance from our place on Ditmar/Morse Plenty of great breakfast spots and more good mexican food places than Mexico. Lived in South "O" for years....then we went east to the hills of Vista in 2008 Way bigger house and still had a view of the ocean and Carlsbad. I do miss the weather down there. And the breweries. . |
