I’m aware of that. I’m also aware that they’re quite docile. I’d give the shovel to a water moccasin faster than a coral snake.

ETA for those that don't know, he's not dead but playing possum.
That's their defense.

Flip him upright and he won't allow it and just keeps rolling onto his back.

So don't get your panties in a bunch. I hear it's uncomfortable.

Wasnt there a video a few years back of a late teen girl picking up a coral snake thinking it was a corn snake. It bit her and she ended up dying?

Or was that the old timeline

Killed a copperhead Saturday, was on the back patio in the middle of the day which I thought was odd.

Chopped his head off with a machete and stuck him in the freezer, figuring to make a hatband out of him later.   I really should have told the wife about that.

We have corals around here but I haven't killed one more than  7-8 inches long in years.

We have a new crop of baby bulls out back, they obvi get a pass and still scare the crap out of me when I nearly step on one.

This one the other night was hanging out on the still warm concrete patio.  They definitely keep the rodents down, and in a scary nature moment I watched an adult bull kill and eat 3 baby rabbits.

The little rattlers we have would not get a pass in my yard, but we never get them in the yard.

Just slit down the belly and peel him.  You don't want the belly skin in any case, the back pattern is the hatband part.

I've skinned rattlesnakes before. You start on the belly side and make a shallow cut lengthwise then pull the skin off carefully. The skin is thin so you have to be gentle not to tear it.

Diet and Nutrition
Texas coral snakes are carnivores. They prey on other snakes, primarily earth snakes, and other small fossorial species. They also occasionally eat small lizards, and rarely rodents.

DIET Carnivore

I doubt they're big enough to eat a mouse. They may try but their head is about the size of your pinky finger.

So that leaves them to eat all the other good things I want in my yard that are not harmful at all.

No thanks.

The problem is that everyone has to come up with their own little cute rhyme so I can’t keep them all straight and have no idea which snake is venomous.

Snake is mellow
Kill a fellow
Snake says hello
Safe for jack
Kills jack
Snake’s on crack
Watch your back
Feed it a snack
Safe for Ted
Kills Ned
Take it to bed
Pat its head

I like snakes, but if it’s around the house and it’s venomous or disguised as venomous - I use the only rhyme I can remember: res black and yellow, i turn it to jello.

Ringneck snakes are venomous and considered harmless to most anything bigger than their intended prey.

I agree with that . The people that can't tell a venomous snake from non venomous. Just kill it because it's a "snake"

Well I have small grandkids and dogs. Neither know what is and isn't venomous.

And as far as relocating one. Why eventually make it someone else's problem?

I have had an aggressive coral snake around my shop.  I know they are normally shy but this one was not.
He was dispatched.  We have a policy on our ranch.
All venomous snakes making a living near the house, shop, or tractor shed are killed.  My parents are in their late years, can’t see the best and move slow.  So that is for their safety.  All other snakes on the remaining fields get photo taken of them.  That’s it.

It’s also false that coral snakes have difficulty getting venom in their prey or “have to bite you between the fingers”. They can poison you on first bite anywhere on your body.  The chewing action when they strike is managing their prey, not an attempt to eventually inject venom.

We do have an abundance of Blue Indigos.  As per our policy, free pass anywhere.

Yeah, well...federal law and all that.

Any attempt to kill, harm, harass, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, trap, capture, collect, or engage eastern indigo snakes is prohibited by the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Penalties include a maximum fine of $25,000 for civil violations and up to $50,000 and/or imprisonment for criminal offenses.

Indigos are awesome. They bite so hard the bite alone, with no venom has been known to kill a rat.

Guy I was talking to in Illonois(runs a nature center with huge reptile collection) said an indigo bite hurt worse than a mild timber rattler bite he received.

My grandpa told me once a long time ago (1940's maybe)  when they lived in west TX (they introduced them to eat rattlesnakes) that they were driving home from church one Sunday afternoon. Small dirt road middle of nowhere.

Grandpa brought the car to a stop because " Now why did the pipeliners just lay a pipeline across the road and didn't provide any ramps to cross it"?

Evidently this was a common practice to lay the pipe and come back to trench and bury it later, but if crossing a road they would have ramps to drive over it. He said it was the largest Blue Indigo he had ever saw.

Anyway , he gets out to see if there's a way around it. He gave it a kick thinking it was a pipe and it slithered off.. lol
