My roommate and I both make 6 figures, I spend probably $400 a month on groceries, max out my 401k and Roth IRA, and I still have no shot at affording a basic, no frills, dump of a home within my means in 2024 outside of the Midwest, the ghetto or way off in boonies.

Both my roommate and I were some of the most patriotic, conservatives you would meet. We would have given all for this country a few years back. And now both of us give zero fucks about America now after watching it rapidly get whored out to migrants and watching every institution get infected with woke.

Our current town, 10 years ago was anywhere USA. Now, it may as well be Mumbai with all the Indians, and there is no social cohesion or sense of community or common values. We're all just fellow consumers, and that's about it. Each time I go to my local bazaar for food.. I mean Costco.. It reaffirms how little I care about this foreign country I'm living in now, other than thankfulness for what remains of my purchasing power before that gets flushed.

And if my roommate and I don't care anymore about America, then I can't imagine how the avg lukewarm American feels. I can't imagine how irate the veterans who gave so much for this country feel watching it become a foreign, broke shithole.

Truth. Cousin worked as a pipeline welder , bought 2 diesel pickups, professional welding rigs for back of both, rented one to other welders and ran the other himself. Also bought a bumper tow toy hauler to tow behind his truck . And the Honda civic that the only Honda part left was the cigarettte lighter (300+ hp , it was quick ). Fully funded Roth IRA, started a portfolio of dividend stocks, and put a couple strippers through college. After 7
Years he started his own business and doesn’t travel now,’owns his house(modest , 1509 square foot), kids 529’ is fully funded every year off the dividend from the stocks, wife is a secretary.

One nasty little thing about UBI no one is talking about is that it can never work without price controls, so full blown socialism/communism is right around the corner from it.

then she's taking the b**mas' houses to shelter said poors, border jumpers, and/or poor border jumpers.

I can believe it.   At my job, id say it's about 1/3 under 30 and 2/3 over 30.  I really don't talk to the under 30 people much (I'm only 42)...mostly cause they r still in the party stage of life and I just don't care.

Anywho, I will say that when they ask about this kind of stuff, I do try to educate them on why savings are important as well as putting $$ into their 401k/457.  Once I show them some basic math about it,  they usually get excited and want to start contributing.  But I do feel alittle bad for them in the fact that with today's prices/inflation, they are definitely at a little disadvantage starting out in life.  The plus though is most know this you can tell they went from a more "liberal" thought process to now more of a "republican" type.  Specially when it comes to theor taxes

I get that, I just have a different mindset.  In my mid thirties I can ride a motorcycle, so I'll ride every chance I get til I can't.  I don't have arthritis, so I'll buy guitars and play the shit out of them.  I can travel without a walker or wheelchair. None of those  things are guaranteed, so I can sell off shit as I lose the ability to use them, but ill never get that time back.  I think it worse to have resources unable to use them, then to eat Ramen noodles everyday knowing you had a hell of a time on the way...

Eta:  I'm not saying don't save, or if you work for a company thay has a 401 don't take advantage of it, but ill never give up doing the things I want to do now in the hopes I can do them in 3 decades.

That's understandable

I still enjoy and do things I want to do now while I'm young, I fully understand that tomorrow isn't guaranteed and I want to start enjoying the life I have while I can

I also what to make sure my future is secured by saving. I plan on retiring between 52 - 55, that way I can still enjoy & do things by not having to work, while my body hopefully isn't broken.

Working sucks, I want to have the freedom of financial independence as soon as possible, if that means I work some OT in my 20's & 30's so be it

Full credit for going for retirement by mid 50s, but im self employed in a trade that's going to most likely require knee replacements starting by 60.  Theres no 401 matching, medical, or pension.  So although everyone's in a different spot my options are live life and deal with the rest down the road, or drive a shit work truck, come home to a shit house, and spend my time dry firing pistols, and jerking it to my vanguard account.  If I'm working 60 hours a week I'm enjoying the fruits of my labor.

3 grand a month is insane.

My mortgage is way less than that.

Judging by your screen name you're prior USMC.

Check out the national guard. One weekend a month and you get paid for it PLUS healthcare benefit and another retirement. It's a win win.

Your USMC time will count towards it, too.

It doesn't work for everyone but it might work for you. It's called the Marine corps National guard for a reason.

Knew quite a few who went that route, my last deployment in 2010 put such a shitty taste in my mouth I was just done.  Again I'm not crapping on retirement, or planning ahead, but you get tired of hearing how young people are retarded for not putting every penny into it.  Maybe they've seen their parents or relatives do that and never actually enjoy their lives.

Don't let a bad deployment or bad command take away a lot of your financial nest egg. Look at the bright side.

Bonuses and a slightly brighter financial future, too.

I'm not a recruiter but if you are in anyway interested message me. I got talked into the guard and it was a superb decision that I don't regret at all.

Another key point is not just putting money in a tax deferred vehicle for retirement but having a rainy day fund.  Very useful if you have hours cut or job loss and need to move for your next job.  And as everyone saw a few years ago, having a nest egg meant being able to tell the boss to F off when the clot shot mandates came down.  Feels damn good being able to dictate your terms without compromise - that's freedom

I was going to retire at 44 had trump stayed in the WhiteHouse. Delayed that about 5 years.

Pensions are rapidly becoming a government employee-only feature. Is that what you're advocating - that everyone become a .gov lackey. Pretty sure there is history lesson or 2 about hiw that works out. Hell of a way for a nation to go. That's some nice, shallow advice you got there.
