I had three car crushes in the 80s:

1: VW Corrado
2: Honda CRX
3: Ford Escort GT

I HAD a HF model about 6 years ago that was bone stock with over 500,xxx miles on the original motor.
When I purchased it from the original owner the A.C. wasn’t working in it so I converted it over to 134 from r12 and drove that car to work which was 64 miles round trip to save on gas. If I remember right I think it was about $ 15 to fill it up.

I had that car for about 5 years and sold it because the AC compressor went out and I was too lazy to fix it. I put that car on the internet and it was gone in 2 days and got my asking price for it also !

I still have a Del Sol SI sitting in the driveway that I drive every now and then.

Google says $9,999 and 39 mpg. But that doesn't sound right.

Further digging says $9,267

That White CRX brings back a lot of memories. When I was 19yrs old I had 25yr old girlfriend who taught me how to drive 5 speed manual because I only ever drove 3 on the tree before that. Afterwards I ended up owning two 6-speed Z28's
But that CRX looks almost exactly like hers. I am going to send her a link for that auction.

Yep, my buddy had one back in the day that he took the back seat out of and built a speaker wall in it. It would blow the windows out if you turned it up past about 10.

I came home late one night & must have parked(driver side rear wheel) on the garden hose. Anyway my grandfather comes over early next day & wanted to wash his car, he comes and wakes me up, Im still half unconscious… Couldn’t find my keys so I grabbed the wheel well & picked the ass end(L side rear) up an couple inches so he could remove the hose… He was amazed. He told my Father, cousins & grandmother I “picked the car up”…

I worked at a Honda dealer in the 80's. I bought a new 87 CRX. Was like $7000 then. I remember I drove from NW PA to South Bend Indiana on $5 worth of gas lol.

Friend had a yellow 89 or 90 Si, he drove the absolute piss out of that thing and it did nothing but take it and ask for more.  Never broke on him that I remember.  Even after it was completely beaten and rusting apart and had been driven through the woods it still ran great and some guy bought what was left for the drivetrain.

OP if you want it get it, life is too short to not be looking back at your car as you walk away from it in the parking lot.

I’ve driven a friend’s manual trans CRX in 1991 after he was too hammered to drive.
He encouraged me to drive the hell out of it on our way back to our unit.
Very fun driving through the twisties in that little thing.

I was really into Hondas in the early 2000s.  Had a chance to buy a CRX as a knock around car but when I called the girl to tell her I'd take it, it had already sold.

The early 90's Preludes were slick little cars. They still had the pop up headlights back then. They were well out of my price range at the time of my life, though.

In the same vein, I'd have loved to have had an '85 RX7. They seemed to have a lot of power, but that was probably because they were so lightweight. I had a friend who had an '83 model. It felt really quick with the 5 speed. You had to have good tires on them because they were easy to spin-out in a turn.

Back in about 2005, i bought a 1988 CRX for $60 off my methhead friend.  It was the sporty version with the plastic fenders.  He had methed it out a bit, and smashed all the windows.  But damn if that wasn't still a good little car.

I believe both generations of the CRX HF were EPA rated at 56 hwy.
Which matched the 3 cylinder Geo Metro XFi.

The 2nd gens (87-91) were exceptional vehicles (and that goes for the Civics of the same era).

1800-2200 lbs, double wishbone on all four corners, and hydraulic steering or, even better, no power steering.

You can’t even buy that combination now for any amount of money.

I looked at a really nice used SI back in the day.... Ended up getting a first gen RX7 instead. That lead to a Turbo II a year later.
Wish I still had either of them. Turbo IIs are all whipped and second gens are getting harder and harder to find and the ones i usually find are convertibles

I had a 2002 Civic SI (EP3 Make in the UK of all places)... bulletproof but a bit slow. Still fun to drive.   Had great seats and the goofy dash mounted rally style shifter.

I had a 91 SI for a year or so around 1994.

Car was super fun to drive. The poster above that called it a go kart was spot on. That’s how it felt.

It blew a head gasket on me. I parked it at my buddies mechanic shop and told him I’d fix it when I saved up the money.

I bought a Thunderbird turbo coupe to replace it. What a disappointment that car was.

I never fixed the CRX. I signed the title over to my buddy a couple years later.

Stupid kid I was.

I had one that my sister had bought brand new in 88.
She is a Flight attendant in Charlotte and flew home to KC a lot.
When she bought a new car she wanted the CRX here so I flew out and drove it back.
Purposely took all back highways.
A very fun driving trip.
Sadly the underbody rot had taken hold from when she lived in Pittsburg and while it lasted for a number of years the rear suspension finally rotted out.
I transplanted the motor into a 91 Civic hatch and drove it for years as my commuter.

I've owned 2 CRXs now and still own a 88si.

Bought it for $800 almost 10 years ago and it was a total dumpster fire. Guy had tried to hack it up and mostly succeeded. Drove it home with some of the gauges not working and no exhaust. Most of the interior was gone so I finished it off into a race car.

Which was a stupid decision . . . I should have saved it and restored it. WAY too far gone now for that. Only glass left is the windshield, rest of the windows are lexan. Made a sheet aluminum plug for the sunroof. Pulled the dash and bent up a sheet aluminum dash.

The only upside was I sold the dash and sunroof and made back half the purchase price. Stock seats were totally trashed so I tossed them and replaced the drivers seat with a kirkey. It weighs right at 1700lbs now.

Easily the most fun I've had driving on curvy roads.

Good luck.

I've not seen what you've described under $1,500 in 15 years and even then it was a total POS.

The DX models had an automatic. SI and HF only came in manuals. Besides the badging, the other easy way to tell a SI is it was the only model to have a sunroof.
